Once gave a great ball
At the Milky Way up in the sky.
They invited the earth
To partake of their mirth,
But she feared to go climbing so high, so high,
But she feared to go climbing so high.
No fiddler had they
Their music to play,
And the stars were afraid it would fail
‘Til the man in the moon
Said he’d whistle a tune
If the comet'd keep time with his tail, his tail,
If the comet'd keep time with his tail.
They danced and they danced,
They pranced and they pranced,
‘Til the moon said he had all he desired,
For his lips were so sore
He could whistle no more,
And the comet began to get tired, get tired,
And the comet began to get tired.
They faded away
To the dim light of day,
The moon and the stars from the ball,
And I’m sorry to say
It was late the next day
Ere they did any shining at all, at all,
Ere they did any shining at all.
