Folk Architecture Page 5

Little systematic research has been done on folk architecture in Arkansas . The old traditional houses—and other buildings as well—are rapidly disappearing. Each year in every county a few more burn or tumble down, or are deliberately destroyed, thus erasing a valuable record from the past. Because it is only by understanding our past that we can hope to know our present, each part of Arkansas needs to have its past recorded. A careful survey of the homes of our ancestors— poor as well as rich, farmer as well as general-can help us understand what kind of people they were and what kind of life, with its triumphs and struggles, they led. If we let ourselves forget where we came from, how can we tell where we are going?
