Lyon records second year of growth; largest since 1996
A second year of admission success coupled with a record rate of student retention helped Lyon College record its second consecutive year of enrollment growth this fall.As of September 14, enrollment of full-time students was 444, an increase of 27 (or 6 percent) over the 1999-2000 beginning enrollment of 417. Total headcount, which includes part-time students, was 474, which also was an increase over the previous year. This represents the largest enrollment at the college since the fall of 1996.
The freshman to sophomore retention rate – nearly 82 percent – was an historic high. The overall retention rate of almost 85 percent was also a record.
The improvement in retention is significant because it indicates a high rate of “customer satisfaction” with the college. College officials said it was one of the most encouraging developments on the campus in several years.
“We are delighted with our retention results,” said Lyon president Dr. Walter Roettger. “This is the second consecutive year of increases in retention. It reflects the hard work of faculty and staff and results from doing lots of things right over a period of time.”
While the full-time enrollment of 127 freshmen was down from last year, a bright spot in the admissions picture was an increase in the number of students transferring to Lyon from other colleges. There are 34 transfer students this year compared to 28 last fall. The campus residential population of 387 also was the highest in recent years.
Arkansas Archeologist to hold meeting in Batesville this weekend
Archaeologists in Arkansas will gather at Lyon College and the Ramada Inn the weekend of Sept. 29-Oct.1. This marks the second time the annual meeting of the Arkansas Archeological Society has been held in Batesville. It was held here three years ago.
The approximately 100 participants will begin gathering at the Ramada Inn on Friday night. The Saturday meeting will be held in Nucor Auditorium on the Lyon College campus, with the first paper to be given at 8:30 a.m. Paper topics will range from an archaeological field school in the country of Jordan to Arkansas site reports.
A paper highlight of the day will be the report by Dr. Julie Morrow on the Greenbrier site in Independence County, the location of the annual two-week society training dig for the last two summers.
Batesville residents giving papers are Anna Parks and George Lankford. Lankford will also serve as host for the paper session on campus. Dr. John Peek, vice president of academic services and dean of the faculty, will extend a formal welcome to the group Saturday morning.
The annual banquet will be held at the Ramada Inn Saturday evening, when Dr. Mary Beth Trubitt will provide an update on excavations at Cahokia, the largest mound site in North America. Cahokia is located near St. Louis, Mo.
The meeting will conclude Sunday morning with a historical tour of Oaklawn Cemetery provided by the Old Independence Regional Museum. Tour leaders will be Nancy Britton and Lankford, both trustees of the museum.
Anyone wishing to join the Society or attend the meeting, or both, are welcome to drop by the registration table at Ramada Friday night or in the Lyon Building rotunda Saturday morning to learn more and pay fees. Any questions in the meantime may be addressed to Dr. George Lankford, ext. 4346.
