VP John Cuny leaving Lyon to accept new appointment

Dr. Walter B. Roettger, president of Lyon, said the college has launched a national search to find a successor. In the meantime, Dr. Roettger announced that a former Lyon trustee, Sam C. Cooke of Batesville, has agreed to serve as interim vice president for business and finance.
“We are very pleased for John” Dr. Roettger said, “though we hate to see him go. He has managed our financial operations with great skill and led us in the selection of a new dining service vendor, the wiring of the campus and technology enhancements, and the creation of a renewal and replacement program that has addressed plant maintenance.”
“John Cuny leaves us financially stronger and with a talented staff able to maintain the momentum we have developed,” Dr. Roettger added. “His new appointment not only offers expanded professional opportunities, but also will take Barbara and him closer to their children. We will miss them both. But we are fortunate to have the services of Sam Cooke, who will give us great interim leadership.”
Cuny and his wife, Barbara, have two daughters.
“For two years, Barbara and I have enjoyed the warmth and kindness of Batesville,” Cuny said. “Although Kentucky will be a wonderful new adventure, we will miss the people from Lyon College and this community. Friends and good co-workers are not easily replaced.”
Cuny joined Lyon in August 1998 after serving 11 years as associate treasurer
and controller of Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Va.
Cooke, who will begin his new duties Sept. 18, stepped down from the board of trustees in June after 12 years of service. From 1992 to 2000, he served as chair of the board’s Buildings and Grounds Commit-tee. Cooke brings nearly 40 years of experience in the business world to his interim position. A 1951 graduate of the University of Tulsa, he worked for Amerada Petroleum and the Sunray-Midcontinent Oil Co. from 1951-1958 before beginning a 30-year career with the Silica Products Co. of Batesville, which produces the high-grade sand used in the manufacture of lenses, mirrors, and other optical products.
Cooke served as president of Silica Products from 1973 until he retired in 1988. He is a former director of the Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce and a former director of the Batesville School District.
Higginbotham, Kaloghirou chosen Mr. and Ms. Lyon College
By JEREMY HAGGARD Seniors Stuart Higginbotham of Hamburg and Maria Kaloghirou of Jonesboro were announced as Mr. and Ms. Lyon College for the 2000-2001 school year, and the President’s Cup was awarded to the Alpha Xi Delta sorority at the President’s Convocation held Tuesday at Lyon College.
From left are Ms. and Mr. Lyon, Maria Kaloghirou and Stuart Higginbotham; SGA President Teryn McDuff and Lyon President Roettger.
Higginbotham and Kaloghirou were selected because of their involvement in campus activities. Higginbotham presides over the Campus Ministry Board, while Kaloghirou is president of the Lyon Ambassadors program, whose goal is to represent Lyon College to prospective freshmen and their families.
The rigorous selection process demands that nominees must have at least a 3.0 grade point average. Students are nominated by faculty and staff and then are chosen by popular vote of the sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
The names of Mr. and Ms. Lyon College were announced at the convocation by SGA President Teryn McDuff, a junior from Nashville, Ark.
Alpha Xi Delta sorority was awarded the President’s Cup, an honor given to a Greek organization for academic achievement, college and community service, and involvement with campus life. Alpha Xi Delta’s many services to the community include holding an annual blood drive and sponsoring an Angel Tree during Christmas.
Alpha Xi Delta was also selected to receive the Xi Achievement Award, the highest award given by the national sorority to an individual chapter. This award was presented to Alpha Xi Delta at the annual conference in July. In addition, Alpha Xi Delta received the Order of the Quill for excellence in management for the fourth consecutive year. Also recognized by the national sorority was Crystal Dickerson ’00 of Mulberry, who received the Elizabeth Quackenbush award that recognizes leadership abilities. This award is given annually to one senior Alpha Xi Delta member in the nation. Senior Airiell McFarland, president of the Lyon chapter of Alpha Xi Delta, accepted these awards at the convocation.
In his convocation address, Dr. Walter Roettger, president of Lyon, mentioned the college’s recent achievements, such as $2 million in new scholarship endowments, increased enrollment and a continuing high ranking in U.S. News & World Report’s list of “America’s Best Colleges.”
Dr. Roettger also commented about safety concerns on campus, due to a recent murder-suicide at the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. “I would like nothing better than to be able to guarantee absolutely and positively the safety of each and every member of our campus community,” he said. “... But such guarantees are impossible and even irresponsible.”
“That said, Lyon has historically been a very safe campus and community. I am confident that this will continue. This is partly because of the kind of college we are; this is partly because of the background and values of those persons we invite into our community. And, this is partly due to the precautions we take and encourage.”
John Noah appointed director of student financial assistance
John T. Noah has been appointed director of student financial assistance at Lyon College. His appointment, effective Aug. 7, was announced by David Wilkey, vice president for enrollment services at Lyon.

He has been at Harding for 10 years, serving in the areas of computer services and enrollment services. Noah also has served as an adjunct instructor in information technologies at Harding since 1992.
“ I am very pleased that Mr. Noah has joined our enrollment services staff,” Vice President Wilkey said. “He brings skills not only in financial aid and admissions but also in computers that will enable us to improve our service to students and their families. Furthermore, I am most pleased with his open management style and his sincere interest is helping students achieve their academic goals.”
Noah received his bachelor’s degree in general studies at Harding in 1992. His professional activities include currently serving as a non-federal trainer for the U.S. Department of Education Reauthorization Training program.
