Dr. DeHaan receives Cottrell College Science Award

David DeHaan, assistant professor of chemistry, has been awarded a Cottrell College Science Award from Research Corporation in the amount of $42,524 to support his project on the "Study of the phase distribution of secondary organic aerosol components with different types of seed particles."

Dr. DeHaan reports that undergraduate involvement in this project has already been substantial over the previous two summers. He encourages his students to be involved in all phases of the project, including apparatus design, troubleshooting and purchasing; the planning and performing of experimental work; data analysis; and the written and oral presentation of results.

At least three students will be doing research on this project during each summer term. The students currently working on this project are Emily Blackwood, Landon Shelby, and Benjamin Gilbert.

Research Corporation awards help to ensure that many students will have the opportunity to participate in high quality research, enriching their undergraduate years. Participation in research funded by the Cottrell College Science Awards has encouraged and inspired many students to follow careers in science. This award can only be applied for in the first three years of appointment.

Dr. DeHaan has been a member of the Lyon faculty since 1997. His area of scholarly expertise is analytical and environmental chemistry. This award has allowed him to continue his ongoing research by acquiring much needed equipment and supplies.

"We are very pleased for Dr. DeHaan and appreciative of the support made available from the Research Corporation," said President Roettger.

Students return from Nichols trip

Fifty-four students have returned safely from Nichols International Studies trips to London, Belize, Athens, and France. Dr. Ed Mosley accompanied a group of 17 students to London; Dr. Robert Gregerson, 15 students to Belize; Dr. Martha Beck, 11 students to Greece; and Dr. Cathy Bordeau, 11 students to France. The groups left on May 10 and returned May 23.

The Nichols International Studies Program is designed to introduce students to other cultures through opportunities to study abroad. To qualify for an international study travel course, a student must have completed four full-time semesters at Lyon College. At the end of the fourth semester, students who have accumulated at least 60 hours of credit and are in good academic and financial standing are eligible for a Nichols Fellowship, which underwrites a substantial portion of the travel costs. When eligibility requirements are met, students may pre-register for one of the Nichols Study Travel Courses offered in the following year.

Wilkey provides enrollment update

David Wilkey, vice president for enrollment services, reports that the College continues to run slightly ahead in transfer deposits and somewhat behind in freshman deposits.

Preliminary figures from the Registrar's Office indicate that retention will meet expectations. Consequently, the College appears on target to experience a second consecutive year of growth in Fall 2001.

The College will host the first of two "Lyon Summer Orientation" days on June 12. Fifty-six entering freshmen, along with their parents, will attend this orientation.

Students will begin arriving at 9:45. Registration begins at 10:00 in Nucor. Students will meet with faculty/staff mentor groups before and after lunch. There will be a parents meeting at 2:15 in Nucor, followed by refreshments and closing at 3:00.

The remainder of freshmen will attend a second orientation on July 24.

Spragins House getting a facelift

Spragins House will get a facelift this summer, according to David Hartwick, Director of the Physical Plant.

Renovations of Spragins House are already under way. The air conditioning will be updated by the installation of new room air handlers. All freshmen residence halls will get a fresh coat of paint along with new carpet.

The plaza area surrounded by the residence halls will also be renovated. All projects are expected to be completed before the fall semester begins.
