Commencement weekend, May 5 & 6

Ninety-two seniors are scheduled to receive bachelor’s degrees at Lyon College’s 128th commencement at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 6, in Couch Memorial Garden.

In addition, two honorary degrees will be awarded and the winner of the 2000 Lamar Williamson Prize will be announced. The recipients of these honors were to be approved by the Lyon Board of Trustees, which is meeting on campus today.

The Baccalaureate service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 5, in Brown Chapel Auditorium. The Rev. Duncan Ferguson of Louisville, Ky., will be guest speaker. The Rev. Ferguson is president of the Association of Presbyterian Colleges and Universities and associate director of the Higher Education Program Area of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).

The baccalaureate will conclude with the Scots Walk to Bryan Lake and the traditional torch-lighting ceremony, during which the 2000 graduates will surround the lake with torches while a bagpiper plays “Amazing Grace.”

Other commencement weekend activities include a garden party at 4 p.m. Friday, May 5, at Bradley Manor for seniors, their parents, faculty and staff, followed by the Alumni Dinner at 5:30 p.m. at Edwards Commons. Tickets for the alumni dinner are $10.50 and may be ordered from Lucy Yeager, Director of Alumni Relations.

Dr. Ge Chen will be missed by all

After five years of dedicated service as the academic coordinator of the Lyon College APPLE Project/Upward Bound Program, Dr. Ge Chen was honored recently with an inscribed plaque from the students and a memory book from the staff and alumni of the program as well as present participants.

Dr. Chen came to the program in 1995 from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville where she earned her Ed.D in secondary education. She is leaving to take a position in Austin, Texas, in the freshman mentoring/retention program at the University of Texas.

During her time at the Lyon College APPLE Project, she supervised the students’ tutors and met personally with every student, offering academic advising and encouragement as each one pursued the goal of earning a college education after high school. In all, she served over 500 students during her tenure.

“We are very grateful to Dr. Chen’s high standards and her caring, person concern for each student,” said APPLE Project Director Marilyn Chlebak. “We will miss her very much.”
