Dr. Russell Stinson to deliver Williamson Lecture Tuesday

Dr. Russell T. Stinson, the Brown Professor of Music at Lyon, will deliver the Lamar Williamson Prize Lecture at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 4, in Nucor Auditorium.

The topic of the lecture is “Bach Goes to Hollywood: The Use of His Music in Motion Pictures.” Portions of the presentation will feature video clips from movies that feature Bach’s music, including “The Godfather,” “Silence of the Lambs,” and “Schindler’s List.”

The Williamson Prize for Excellence in Teaching is given annually to the faculty member deemed to be most outstanding in four categories: professional competence, scholarly ability, exemplary humane and Christian values, and contributions to the community.

Stinson is the 20th Lyon professor to receive the prize, which was established in 1979 by the Lyon Board of Trustees in memory of Lamar Williamson (1887-1974) of Monticello, Ark., a distinguished lawyer, businessman and civic and Presbyterian Church leader, who attended Lyon College from 1901-1903 and remained a friend of the college the rest of his life.

The Williamson Prize confers upon the recipient a silver cup and a stipend from a memorial fund, both of which were given by J. Gaston Williamson of Little Rock in honor of his father.

The award is announced at commencement each May. The winner of the prize presents a public lecture at a convocation the following academic year.

Heasley Lecture to be presented by Least Heat-Moon

Writer William Least Heat-Moon will receive the 2000 Leila Lenore Heasley Prize and present a public reading of his work at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 3, in the Bevens Room of Brown Chapel.

On Tuesday, April 4, a “writer’s life” interview and luncheon will be 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Bevens Room.

Least Heat-Moon is the author of several works of nonfiction, an essay contributor to magazines and other books, and also a photojournalist.

His most recent work, “River-Horse,” a New York Times best seller published in 1999 by Houghton-Mifflin Company, is about his travels on American rivers.

Least Heat-Moon has written several books about his travels across the United States. Before “River-Horse,” his most widely acclaimed book was “Blue Highways: A Journey into America” in 1984.

The Leila Lenore Heasley Prize is awarded annually to a distinguished representative of American or international letters, theatre, or cinema, with the recipient of the prize giving a public lecture, performance, or reading at Lyon.

Batesville Community Theatre presents 'The Foreigner'

The Batesville Community Theatre is sponsoring a production of the award-winning comedy, “The Foreigner,” to be performed in Brown Chapel Auditorium on April 7, 8 and 9. The production will take place at 7:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday nights, with a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee.

“The Foreigner,” written by Larry Shue and directed by Kelly Grooms, is a production of The Studio for the Arts of Pocahontas, and is presented by professional touring troupe members of The Studio Players. According to a Studio for the Arts press release, the play takes place in a fishing lodge in rural Georgia, and centers around a young man named Charlie, who is overcome with fear at the thought of carrying on conversations with strangers. A friend tries to solve his problem by telling everyone that Charlie is from a foreign country and can't speak English. Since Charlie really can understand English, he overhears lodge residents and visitors making damaging revelations. A simple young country bumpkin befriends Charlie and tries to teach him English. Before the conclusion of the play, Charlie saves the day, gains confidence in himself, and leads the audience to a “wildly funny climax.”

Admission is $8 for adults, and $5 for children age 12 and under and senior citizens. Tickets may be purchased at the door, or in advance at Schwegman Office City, 308 Main Street in Batesville. Sponsorship of this production is made possible in part by grants from the Arkansas Arts Council, National Endowment for the Arts, and the Batesville Area Arts Council fund drive.
