Lyon hosts international night

Lyon College and the community international night committee invite you, your family, and your guests to attend International Night at 5 p.m. Saturday in Edwards Commons Dining Hall.

Sponsors of the community international night include: Eastman Chemical Company, Rotary Club of Batesville, Citizens Bank, LaCroix Optical, and Entergy.

The event hosts international students from Lyon College, University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville, area high schools, and all international residents of the community.

There is no admission fee for the evening. Instead, bring your favorite dish to share with other guests. Feel free to explore the international theme. Each dish should serve at least 8-10 people. Lyon College food service will provide drinks and dessert.

There will be entertainment and door prizes. Ethnic dress is encouraged. Multi-flag T-shirts for $15 and sweatshirts for $20 will also be sold.

Please come and explore the world. This event is to promote diversity and internationalism on campus and in the community.

Although there is no cost for the evening, advance registration is required. For more information, contact international student adviser Cathy Rosenblum at (870) 793-1782 or e-mail crosenblum@lyon.edu.

Dr. Ed Mosley, master of Spragins House, announces the Spring ’00 members of the E-team, which honors freshmen for their academic and campus activity achievements. Inducted recently are (from left) Lacie Bray of Garfield, Allison Roach of Tuckerman, Chris Woodward of Jonesboro, and Margaret McWilliams of Benton.

Lankford article published in quarterly

George Lankford’s article on “Shawnee Convergence: Immigrant Indians in the Ozarks” appeared in the recent issue of the Arkansas Historical Quarterly (58: 4 (1999): 390-413).  Since it served as the research basis for the Shawnee exhibit at the Old Independence Regional Museum, off-prints of the article will be available for sale at the Museum gift shop.

Sports

Basketball

The Scots and the Pipers closed out the regular season Thursday, hosting Freed-Hardeman University in Becknell Gymnasium.

Depending on the results of the games, both the Scots and the Pipers know where they will be playing their first games of the TranSouth Conference Tournament.

The Scots know they will be hosting a first-round game against Williams Baptist College Saturday.

For the Pipers, where and who they will play depended on Thursday night’s game. If the Pipers lost, they will host Williams Baptist College in a first-round game Saturday. If the Pipers were victorious Thursday against Freed-Hardeman, they will travel to a familiar opponent for a game Monday night — Freed Hardeman.

On Feb. 17, the Pipers beat the David Lipscomb Lady Bisons 77-74 in Nashville, Tenn. The Scots lost to Lipscomb, 89-64.

On Feb. 19, both the Pipers and the Scots were defeated by Union University in Jackson, Tenn. Union defeated the Pipers 84-59. The Scots lost 56-55 in a close game after leading at halftime.

Baseball

The Scots have posted a 10-3 record so far. On Feb. 17, the Scots defeated Hendrix 10-0 in Conway. Over the weekend, the Scots swept a four-game series from William Woods with 6-4, 5-0, 11-7, and 11-1 games. On Tuesday, the Scots dropped a 3-0 decision to NCAA Division I Arkansas State in Jonesboro.

The team traveled to Memphis Thursday to play a doubleheader at Christian Brothers University. The Scots also host the Lyon College Classic this weekend. Games begin today at Scots Field.

Tennis

The Pipers won their first match of the season, defeating Christian Brothers University in a home match. The win was also the first for Coach Be Pham, who is in his first season as coach of the Pipers and Scots. The win puts the Pipers at 1-2 on the season.

The Scots lost their match to Christian Brothers. The loss dropped the Scots to 0-3.

Both teams play Union University in Jackson, Tenn., today. The Pipers host David Lipscomb 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Lyon courts.
