Ashley-Lewis Concert to feature Le Trio Gershwin
Le Trio Gershwin, praised by both American and European
audiences alike, is set to perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1, in the Bevens
Music Room of Brown Chapel at Lyon College. The event, part of the Ashley-Lewis
Concert and Recital Series, is free and open to the public.
One of the most famous American musical composers, Gershwin composed more than 700 songs in his lifetime. Many of his works such as Swanee and Rhapsody in Blue can still be heard in today’s mainstream musical culture, including a recent segment with Rhapsody in Blue in Disney’s Fantasia 2000. Gershwin died of a brain tumor in 1937 at age 39.
Le Trio Gershwin is a Parisian ensemble composed of guitarist Alfred Street, pianist Jean-Nöel Roux and cellist Benoît Charvet, who is also the main arranger. The three have performed in a variety of venues, and they released an album in 1998 called Le Trio Plays Gershwin. Each of the three is also an individual artist in his own right.
The songs scheduled for the performance are among Gershwin’s most famous: But Not For Me, Porgy and Bess, Nice Work If You Can Get It, A Foggy Day and Rhapsody in Blue.
The Ashley-Lewis Con-cert and Recital Series was endowed in 1982 as a gift from Jewel Ann Price Ashley of Newport in honor of her husband, Dr. John D. Ashley, and in memory of her two sons, John Nicholas Lewis III and Mark Price Lewis. Her purpose was to recognize her husband’s strong affinity for music, art and humanities and to draw interest from organized musicians and artists to bring their talents for showcase at Lyon College and the surrounding Batesville and Newport communities.
Lyon College recently received portraits of John Ashley and Ann Ashley. Both portraits will hang in Brown Chapel.
Lyon's writer-in-residence to present poetry reading
Andrea Hollander Budy, writer-in-residence at Lyon College, will present a free public reading of her work at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2, in the college’s Bevens Music Room of Brown Chapel.
A book signing and refreshments will follow the public reading, which is part of the college’s Visiting Writers Series this fall.
She also will give an informal talk about the writing life in the Flanders Reading Room of the Lyon Building at noon the same day. Those attending the lunchtime talk may bring their lunch or order a box lunch.
Her first full-length collection of poetry, “House Without a Dreamer,” won Budy the Nicholas Roerich Poetry Prize. Her fifth book, “The Other Life,” was recently released by Story Line Press.
Budy was educated at Boston University and the University of Colorado. She has taught at Lyon College since 1991, and in 1998, she was awarded the Lamar Williamson Prize for Teaching Excellence. She has received fellowships from the National Endowment of the Arts and the Arkansas Arts Council.
Award-winning poet Fred Marchant will conclude the college’s 2000-01 Visiting Writers Series on Nov. 16.
