Lyons announce $10 million challenge
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lyon Jr. of Little Rock have announced a challenge gift of up to $10 million to Lyon College in Batesville. The gift, potentially one of the largest ever made to the college, was announced at a news conference Tuesday at First Star Bank in North Little Rock. The challenge gift will match dollar for dollar any new gift a donor makes to the college for any purpose this year.
Lyon’s “Fulfilling the Promise” fundraising campaign concludes Dec. 31, and college officials are optimistic the challenge by Mr. and Mrs. Lyon will enable the college to meet and exceed its goal of raising $80 million. As of December 1999, Lyon was less than $7 million away from its goal with just over $73 million received.
“Today, Jane and I issue a challenge to everyone who is committed to quality higher education,” Mr. Lyon said. “We invite you to join us in fulfilling the promise of growth and excellence in this state and this region. We are proud to provide this $10 million challenge gift. Together, we can make a difference for this wonderful college, which for 128 years has served our sons and daughters and continues to develop, in a culture of honor, responsible citizens and leaders committed to continued personal growth and service.”
Mr. Lyon is a member of the college’s board of trustees. He is president of Arkansas Irrigation Co. and of Wingmead, Inc.
“Frank and Jane Lyon’s extraordinary leadership commitment moves us closer to fulfilling the promise of becoming a liberal arts college of national consequence,” said Dr. Walter B. Roettger, president of Lyon. “We invite all alumni and friends to join the Lyons in their investment in and commitment to a college that provides a quality liberal arts education, promotes honorable conduct among all members of the community, and prepares students with the abilities and values to lead.”
The college will receive the matching funds pledged by the Lyon family for the total amount of all new gifts and pledges made to the college this year, from the smallest annual fund gift to multimillion dollar endowments. Naming and recognition opportunities will be granted to the donor at the level that includes the match.
Among other things, the money raised in the campaign will be used to endow faculty positions, special academic programs, student life programs and scholarships. It also will be used for capital projects, computer technology, and athletic and student facilities.
War will be topic of archaeology lecture
If you were a Native American in northeast Arkansas in 1500, what would cause you to go to war? That question will be addressed by Dr. David H. Dye, chairman of the anthropology department at the University of Memphis, in a free slide lecture at Lyon College at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, in Nucor Auditorium.Dye’s research specialization is the archaeology of the central Mississippi Valley, and he has been conducting excavations for two decades in northeast Arkansas and west Tennessee. He has published more than 16 articles on the results, and he has edited two books.
A native of Memphis, Dye received his bachelor’s degree in anthropology at Memphis State, then earned his master’s at Louisiana State. His Ph.D. is from Washington University in St. Louis. He has taught anthropology and archaeology at the University of Memphis since 1980 and is now the chairman of the department.
The event is free and open to the public. Dye’s visit to Batesville is hosted by the Social Science Division of Lyon College. His talk will be followed one week later by a related slide lecture on ancient warfare, one focusing on the Olmec and Maya. That talk by Dr. Kent Reilly of Southwest Texas State University will also be open to the public.
