2006 Contemporary
Writers Series concludes Tuesday
On Tuesday, Nov. 28, the final events of the Contemporary Writers Series for this year will be held in the Bevens Music Room. At 11 a.m., writer-in-residence Andrea Hollander Budy will present a reading of her award-winning prose memoir. Later that evening at 7:30 p.m., Budy’s students from her Creative Writing Workshop will read poems they have written during the semester. Afterwards, Budy will read from her new poetry collection, Woman in the Painting. (Autumn House Press). A book signing will follow. The book is Budy’s third full-length collection of poetry. Her first, House Without a Dreamer, won the Nicholas Roerich Poetry Prize in 1993 and was named one of the Best Books of the Year by Writer’s Digest. Her second, The Other Life, was featured in The Washington Post by Pulitzer Prizewinner Rite Dove and singled out by Fred Chappell, who wrote a review of the collection: "Direct but delicate in style, strong but never strident, The Other Life advances Andrea Hollander Budy into our foremost poetic ranks." Budy has also published three award-winning chapbooks, small books originally produced in the 17th century and sold by "chapmen" and peddlers. They are usually chapter-length books that deal with a single theme. An acclaimed poet and essayist, Budy’s awards and honors include the D.H. Lawrence Fellowship, a Pushcart Prize for prose memoir, the Runes Poetry Award and fellowships from the Arkansas Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. She’s also won over a dozen other national awards for her writing. Budy has published more than 200 individual poems and essays in anthologies, textbooks and literary journals. She has also given more than 100 readings, lectures, and workshops The Lyon College Contemporary Writers Series, the Visiting Fellowship in Creative Writing, and the Heasley Prize Reading Series, all provide outstanding opportunities to anyone interested in reading – or writing – fiction, poetry, drama and creative non-fiction. Budy initiated the Contemporary Writers Series in 1991 when she joined the faculty, and the series immediately began drawing both Lyon students and members of the community to hear authors read from, and speak about, their work.

Lyon plans series of holiday festivities
The sharp, cool winds of winter are beginning to blow, and with them come a series of holiday events planned at Lyon College.
Christmas Festival
On Friday, Dec. 1, Lyon will hold the annual Christmas Festival in Edwards Commons from 5 to 6:30 p.m. The evening’s events will begin with a buffet supper, and dinner is free for faculty, staff and their immediate families. Others are welcome to attend at a cost of $8 for adults and $4 for children ages 6 – 12.
At 5:45 p.m., Santa Claus will make a special appearance. Please let the College Christmas Elf, Cindy Gillaspie (x4201) know if your child/children will want to visit with Santa. We will also have a drawing for prizes for faculty, staff and students and you must be present to win.
At 6:30 p.m., the Lyon College Concert Chorale, under the direction of Dr. Joel Plaag, will present a program of "A Caroling Christmas," featuring a variety of Christmas songs, hymns, scripture readings, and a homily by the Rev. Nancy McSpadden in Brown Chapel. Following the concert, weather permitting, the group will join in the traditional Christmas tree lighting on the Chapel steps.
Professor of the Year and holiday reception scheduled
On Friday, Dec. 8, faculty and staff are invited to join Dr. Roettger and his family at their traditional holiday reception at Bradley Manor from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. to celebrate the season and honor Dr. Catherine Bordeau as the 2006 Professor of the Year.

Lyon music department to sponsor 'Festival of Lessons and Carols'
The soft, melodic sounds of flutes and voices will soon celebrate the
Christmas season in Batesville with old fashioned carols and Bible stories.
On Sunday, Dec. 3, at 4 p.m., the annual “Festival of Lessons and Carols,”
sponsored by the music department of Lyon College, will be held at the
Christian Science Society of Batesville, located on the corner of College
and 18th Streets.
The program uses the traditional English format of nine Christmas carols and
nine Christmas readings from the Bible. The church features superb acoustics
and an internationally renowned Dutch pipe organ situated in the rear
gallery.
Performing the prelude and three of the carols will be the Lyon College
Flute Choir, under the direction of Laura Bauman Stinson. This ensemble is
now in its 10th year and numbers roughly 10 flutists. The group performs on
flutes at different pitch, including alto and bass flute. Its membership
includes Lyon students and faculty as well as community members.
Also participating will be two Lyon students, classical guitarist Seth Flood
and soprano Katie Wheeler. Mr. Flood will perform a setting of “What Child
is This” and accompany Wheeler on “Silent Night.” Wheeler will also sing “O
Holy Night.”
At the organ will be Russell Stinson, the college Organist, who will play
Christmas carols before the service, accompany the congregation on three
carols, and perform a Bach postlude after the service.
The readers of the scripture passages include flute choir members Martha
Beck, Meagan Bullock, Jeanne Fitzgerald and Anelisa Wood, Lyon student Seth
Flood, English professor Dr. Terrell Tebbetts, and Batesville community
members Connie Schirmer and Bob Williamson. Dr. George Lankford, a retired
Lyon professor, will preside.

The International Student Association hosted "International Food Tasting Night" on Nov. 16 during International Education Week (Nov. 13-17). Lyon
students conducting survey in downtown Batesville
Lyon College students in Dr. Mahbubul Kabir's statistics class will conduct
a survey of visitors to downtown Batesville through Dec. 1. The survey was
commissioned by Main Street Batesville.
“It's a great way for the students to get some 'real world' experience in
statistics,” Donna Ernest, Main Street Batesville executive director, said.
“It's also an opportunity for Main Street Batesville to get important and
helpful information. We'll use the results of this survey to help target the
right businesses for the historic downtown district and to address concerns
expressed by our visitors.”
The survey will be taken randomly and will take a few minutes to complete.
“We hope everyone that's approached will take the time to help us make
downtown Batesville their favorite place to visit and shop,” Ernest said.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Jonathan Donaldson exploded for 27 points, nine rebounds and six steals to power the Lyon College Scots to a 72-70 overtime triumph over the the Philander Smith Panthers in nonconference play Saturday evening.
Donaldson, a junior guard from Beebe, Ark., shot 9 of 15 from the field, 2 of 5 from 3-point range and 7 of 8 from the charity stripe to notch his game-high total. The 27 points was easily a season-high from the All-TranSouth Conference guard.
Scots’ teammates Levi Taylor pitched in 15 points and Preston Butts tacked on 10 to give the squad a formidable frontline compliment to Donaldson. Butts also made a significant defensive contribution with six steals – a career high.
Philander received a team-high 20 points from Darren Jamison and 14 from Johnny Lewis.
Lyon wins its second consecutive game and improves to 5-3 this season. The Scots will play Central Baptist College in Conway at 7 p.m. tonight.
Pipers shoot well from 3-point range in victory
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Lyon College Pipers utilized a sharp-shooting night from 3-point range and a group of four players in double figures to outduel Philander Smith, 59-46, in a nonconference road game Saturday evening.
Lyon shot 43 percent (7 of 16) from the arc and got a double-double from sophomore Maribeth Waters, who scored 11 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Nikki Baker led the Pipers in scoring with 13 points while teammate Snezana Jovanovic pitched in 11 points and seven boards. April Carter added 11 points and six boards.
Victoria Murdoch was Philander’s high-scorer with 12 points and Shontaye Reed had 10.
Twenty four Piper turnovers and 22 Philander Smith free throws helped keep the game close on a night in which the Pipers held the Lady Panthers to only 16.9 percent from the field.
The Pipers even their record to 4-4 this season and host Bacone
at 7 0’clock tonight in Becknell Gymnasium.
