Lyon College will host a dual celebration at 6 p.m. Thursday

Lyon will hold the inaugural kickoff of the Batesville Chapter of Alumni, Parents and Friends. It will also celebrate the 90th birthday of William Carl Garner, a 1938 alumnus of the college.

An all-American buffet picnic will be served, along with birthday cake, in Couch Garden.

Please RSVP to Kay Rush at (870) 698-4240 or e-mail krush@lyon.edu.

The Batesville Chapter of Alumni, Parents and Friends is the latest of similar chapters that have been organized around the state. Other chapters are located in Little Rock and northwest Arkansas, and another is planned for Jonesboro later this year.

Carl Garner of Tumbling Shoals retired in 1996 after 58 years as an employee of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He was one of the longest consecutive serving federal employees in the nation’s history.

Garner began his career with the Army Corps of Engineers on June 16, 1938, following his graduation from Arkansas College (now Lyon College). His early career placed him at Bull Shoals Lake in northern Arkansas. On March 15, 1959, he was assigned to the new project at Greers Ferry Lake as a supervisor for Construction Management Engineering.

“Greers Ferry Lake would become Carl Garners lifes work, and today you cannot mention one without mentioning the other,” said then-Sen. David Pryor upon Garner’s retirement. “On October 14, 1962, Carl was named Resident Engineer for Greers Ferry Lake, and has held that title for 34 years. On October 3, 1963, President John F. Kennedy dedicated the last public works project of his life and short presidency on a hillside overlooking the dam at Greers Ferry Lake. Carl Garner stood on the podium with the President on that occasion.

“Carl Garner had a vision,” Sen. Pryor said. “He was an environmentalist long before the word became common in our vernacular. Carls vision was that Greers Ferry Lake should be pollution free and should reflect the natural beauty and landscape of the region. Greers Ferry Lake should be a model for the nation, and today, it is the pearl in our nation's inventory of multiple purpose man-made lakes."

The William Carl Garner Visitor Center at Greers Ferry Lake is named in his honor and is operated by Lyon College.

Scots sign Craig Amos of Conway High School

The Lyon College Scots men’s basketball team has signed Craig Amos, a 6-8 post player from Conway High School.  Amos prepped at Conway under Coach James Bates. Bates said, “Craig made tremendous strides this year. He became our first and secnd option on offense midway through the season. Lyon is getting a quality player and student.”

Craig helped lead the Wampus Cats to a 16-10 record and into the first round of the Class AAAAA State Tournament. During his senior season, Amos averaged 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 blocks per game while connecting on 55% of his field goals and 70% of his free throws. Craig was also named all-conference and an honor graduate.

“Craig will bring to the Scots a true 4-5 type player," said Scots Head Coach Kevin Jenkins. "He runs the floor very well and has a nice touch out to 15 feet. I am very excited that Craig will be joining the Scot family next year. “He has played four years in the very tough AAAAA-Central conference and should be able to come in and contribute early because of his ability. We feel that Craig will be a great asset to the Lyon College community.”
