Christmas events planned for faculty, staff

CHRISTMAS DINNER: On Friday, December 2, the College will hold its annual Christmas Dinner. The evening’s events will begin with a buffet supper in Edwards Commons from 5 to 6:30 p.m. There is no charge to faculty, staff and their immediate families. Others are invited at a cost of $8 for adults and $4 for children 6-12. At 5:45 p.m. there will be a special appearance by Santa Claus. Please let Cindy (cgillaspie@lyon.edu) know if your child/children will want to visit with Santa. Door prizes will also be given away to faculty and staff.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT: At 6:30 p.m., December 2, the Lyon College Concert Choir, under the direction of  Joel Plaag, will present a program, “Now We Sing of Christmas,” featuring a variety of Christmas songs, hymns, scripture readings, and a homily by the Rev. Nancy McSpadden in Brown Chapel. Following the choir concert - weather permitting - there will be the traditional Christmas tree-lighting on the Chapel steps. The public is invited and admission will be free.

FESTIVAL OF LESSONS AND CAROLS: At 4 p.m. Sunday, December 4, the annual Festival of Lessons and Carols will be held at the Christian Science Society, 18th and College streets, in Batesville. College organist Russell Stinson, the Lyon College Flute Choir (directed by Laura Bauman Stinson) and harpist Brooke Hollis will perform traditional Christmas music with Scripture readings. The program will showcase the church's neo-baroque Flentrop organ.

HOLIDAY RECEPTION: On Friday, December 9, faculty and staff are invited to join Walter, Peggy and Dan Roettger at their traditional holiday reception at Bradley Manor from 4:30-6:30 p.m. to celebrate the season. Please join us for a bit of holiday cheer!

Students to perform in recital

Lyon students will perform a formal concert of classical and popular works at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Brown Chapel. The performers are:  Robert Bailey, Nathan Reinhardt, John O'Connor, Jason Bugeja, Christina Cody, Neva Joseph, Skye Hart, Chris Slaymaker, Ronica Williamson, Ola Czerwinska, and Allyn Dodd.

 

 

Lyon students to present papers on campaigns to Butler Center

Students in Skip Rutherford’s “Arkansas Politics” class at Lyon College will donate their papers on famous Arkansas political campaigns to the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies at 2 p.m. Sunday, December 4, program and reception in the Darragh Center at the Central Arkansas Library Main Building in Little Rock.

These semester-long research projects are being placed in the Butler Center’s permanent collection.

Those donating their research are: Jessica Allen of Jacksonville; Jonathan Bunch of Newark; Michael Dicken of Russellville; Daniel Haney of Farmington, Mo.; Josh Manning of Crawfordsville; Alyssa Papineau of Tuckerman; Adam Penman of Pottsville; Matt Petty of Cabot; Jacob Sperry of Pine Bluff; Sarah Sweatt of Hot Springs; J.T. Tarpley of Gurdon; and Eric Wilson of Little Rock.

The featured campaigns presented will be: Dale Alford-Brooks Hays (Congress, 1958); Frank Holt-Jim Johnson (runoff)-Win Rockefeller (Governor, 1966); Dale Bumpers-Orval Faubus (runoff)-Win Rockefeller (Governor, 1970); Ted Boswell-Foster Johnson-John McClellan-David Pryor (U.S. Senate, 1972); Dale Bumpers-J. Sports

Lyon high school tournament begins Saturday

Lyon College will host the annual Lyon College High School Basketball Tournament starting Saturday, December 3, and running through Saturday, December 10. No games will be played Tuesday, December 6.

Sixteen girls’ teams and 16 boys’ teams from Independence and surrounding counties will be competing in the tournament. Sponsors this year are Liberty Bank, Taco Bell and Cordell’s Athletics.

Admission will be $3 for adults, $2 for student. Lyon students are admitted free with ID. AAA passes will be honored. The tournament is a fundraiser for the Lyon College Booster Club.

Scots Basketball

The Scots have fallen to 4-4 for the season after three straight losses, including two in the Central Baptist College Classic in Conway over the weekend. The Scots lost to Oklahoma Baptist 91-77 Friday and to LSU-Shreveport 83-72 on Saturday in the CBC invitational.

Despite 20 points from Levi Taylor, No. 25 Lyon fell to visiting No. 24 Missouri Baptist 77-72 Tuesday at Becknell Gymnasium. The Spartans rallied from a 44-41 halftime deficit. For Lyon, Norris Weintz added 18 points and had a team-high seven rebounds while Jason Donaldson 15 points.

The Scots will try to get back on the winning track Tuesday when they host Williams Baptist at 8 p.m. in Becknell.

Pipers Basketball

Prescilla Mathias scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the Lyon Pipers (3-4 ) overcame a 32-28 halftime deficit to post a 63-52 victory Tuesday night over Arkansas Baptist at Becknell Gymnasium. Maribeth Waters, Orma Fisher and Crystal Bogy all added 10 for Lyon.

The Pipers will host Williams Baptist at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Becknell.
