Whitfield named ATE Laureate
Whitfield was recognized for her contributions of over 20 years of membership in the organization, including her service as president of two state ATE units and membership in several ATE boards and committees. She is currently a member of the Arkansas state ATE board and the chair of the membership committee. In addition to her contributions to her professional organization, Whitfield has also made significant contributions to her field. In the Winter 2004 issue of Multicultural Perspectives, the official journal of the National Association for Multicultural Education, Whitfield published “Teachers as Healers: 21st Century Possibility? Or Necessity?” with her colleague, Dr. Beverly Klug of Idaho State University. The article addressed the increased emphasis on preparing teachers to work with poor, at-risk, ethnically diverse, and special needs students. “To achieve this, teacher educators must encourage candidates to reach beyond the technical aspects of teaching to become caring professionals,” Whitfield said. Mortar Board chapter to induct new members Lyon College will initiate new members into their chapter of Mortar Board on March 21. In its third year on the Lyon campus, Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for their achievements in scholarship, leadership and service, provides opportunities for continued leadership development, and promotes service to colleges and universities. Students to be inducted are Emily Anderson of Fayetteville; Buckley Bridges of Jonesboro; Shannon Brooks of Melbourne; Braye Cloud of North Little Rock; Justin Holt of Greers Ferry; Bobbi Love of Cabot; Patrick McLaurin of Lubbock, Texas; Melanie Morrison of Jonesboro; Sarah Phillips of Lake City; Seth Purcell of Paragould; Rachel Sauser of Bono; Amy Schmidt of Jonesboro; Christy Schuchardt of Jonesboro; Rebecca Sharp of Evening Shade; CaSandra Spurlock of Evening Shade; and Whitney Tevebaugh of Cabot. Founded in 1918 as the first and only national society for college senior women (opened to men in 1975), Mortar Board has been a member of the Association of College Honor Societies since 1937. Today Mortar Board boasts an initiated membership of over 200,000 with over 200 chapters on college campuses throughout the nation. Local chapters thrive on an active membership. Projects undertaken by the chapters vary from campus to campus, but all emphasize the ideals of scholarship, leadership, and service. Mortar Board also promotes awareness of many issues through the society’s National Project—issues such as organ donor awareness, AIDS awareness, the environment, literacy, and women and children’s issues. |
Lyon concert choir to begin spring tour Sunday
Lyon College’s concert choir will prepare for its annual spring tour by performing a concert at First Presbyterian Church in Batesville at 4 p.m. Sunday, February 29.
The choir will perform a wide variety of music from renaissance to vocal jazz, and the performance is free and open to the public.
From Batesville, the 36-member group will travel to Little Rock; Memphis, Tennessee; Chicago, Illinois; Des Moines, Iowa; El Dorado, Kansas; and Bella Vista; performing a number of religious and secular pieces ranging from 16th century sacred music to an a capella folk medley.
Joel Plaag, the choir’s director said, “I am really excited about the choir.” He also said, “Tour brings an ensemble together both musically and socially more than any rehearsal can. Doing the same show every night makes them gel more as an ensemble rather than as individuals.”
“I wasn’t able to go on the trip last year,” said junior, and choir veteran, Jennifer Stottman, who shares Plaag’s enthusiasm, “and I’m really excited to be able to go this year.”

Liberian ambassador thanks Presbyterians for rice donation
Ambassador S. Prince Porte of Liberia was a guest at the Arkansas Presbytery meeting held at Lyon College last weekend.
Porte, who is moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Liberia, came to the gathering to thank the Presbyterians for the donation of 176,000 pounds of rice to the famine-stricken African nation.
“It was my first visit to Arkansas,” Porte said, commending the “hospitality and warmness of the people.”
The Presbytery Disaster Assistance Team first witnessed the severity of famine in Liberia during a visit to the war-torn country last year. When the team returned, it contacted various presbyteries seeking help. David Gill, director of the Ferncliff Camp and Conference Center, spearheaded the fundraising effort.
“Our presbytery and the Cumberland Presbytery of Arkansas combined their efforts to raise the funds to send Arkansas rice to Liberia,” said Claudia Marsh, director of church relations at Lyon College.
In about five weeks, the Presbyterians had raised $15,000. The rice, grown in Dewitt, Arkansas, was shipped to Liberia in October and arrived in December. Ambassador Porte was on hand to receive the rice, which he said helped more than 30,000 people.
“It helped a good deal,” Porte said. “The country is pulling itself out of a 14-year civil war; the entire fabric of the country was destroyed.” Over 350,000 people, out of the 3.5 million in Liberia, died in the war.

Originally from Pennsylvania, she comes most recently from Carrollton, Georgia, where she was the assistant director of residence life at the State University of West Georgia.
“I’d always wanted to work at a small school,” Dyer said, “and this looked like a good opportunity for me to do that, as well as a step up professionally.”
Dyer is particularly excited about developing a mission statement for her department.
Attracted to Lyon by its Scottish Heritage Program, Dyer is also looking forward to the college’s 25th Scottish Festival, which will be April 23-25.

Campus Ministries Board visits youth home
The
Lyon Campus Ministries Board sponsored a Service Trip to the Vera Lloyd Presbyterian
Home in Monticello on February 7. Three students, Morgan Presley, Laura McWilliams and Heather Grantham and two staff members, Nancy McSpadden and Dana
Davidson, spent an evening with the current residents of the youth home. The
Lyon team shared an evening meal in two of the group homes, then met with
additional youth in the Lyon Gymnasium for a time of fellowship. The group from
Lyon led the youth in numerous games and activities, a devotional and spent some
time discussing Lyon College and the opportunities available here.
Sunday morning, the group attended the First Presbyterian Church of Monticello where Nancy McSpadden acted as the visiting minister for their worship service. The residents of the Youth Home attended that service as well. The FPC youth group hosted the Lyon representatives for lunch following the service. The trip was a memorable time for all those involved and plans are being made to return to the Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Home again soon.
