Julie Church finishes 6th in national golf tournament
Piper
golfer Julie Church finished sixth in the NAIA National Tournament, shooting
a 29-over-par 317 during the four-day, 72-hole event. The tournament was
held at the Pine Lakes Country Club in Palm Coast, Florida.
“I’m very proud of her,” Lyon Coach Brian Krug said. “I know she is very happy with her results. It was really good to see her do so well because the last three years Julie missed the all-region team by one stroke each year. She was due to have a great tournament.”
Church, of Blytheville, who will be a senior next fall, was named to the all-tournament team. She shot 79-79-83-76.
“The scores she put up this year would have won the tournament last year,” Krug said. “That show the difference a year makes – not just for Julie but for the quality of golf around the country.”
Teammate Adriane Barnett, a junior from Jonesboro who finished sixth in the national tournament last year, struggled this year and finished 83rd out of 119 golfers. She shot 89-99-84-84 for a 356 total.
The Piper golf team won the TranSouth Conference golf championship for the second year in a row this spring. However, unlike last year, the team was not invited to play in the national tournament. Church and Barnett were invited to compete in individual play.
Dr. Beck selected for NEH seminar, scholar-in-residence programs
Dr.
Martha Beck, associate professor of philosophy at Lyon College, has been
selected to attend a summer study opportunity supported by the National
Endowment for the Humanities.
Dr. Beck will participate in a seminar titled, “Aristotle on Meaning and Thought.” The five-week program will be held at San Diego State University and will be directed by Professors Deborah Modrak and Mark Wheeler.
The 15 teachers selected to participate in the program will receive a stipend of $3,250 to cover travel, study and living expenses.
The Endowment is a federal agency that each summer supports seminars and institutes at colleges and universities so that teachers can work in collaboration and study with experts in humanities disciplines.
In August, Dr. Beck will be a scholar-in-residence at “Studium,” a forum at St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota. Studium, comprised of women from the Benedictine community in nearby St. Joseph, Minnesota, invites those whose research is in keeping with its mission to participate as scholars-in-residence
Dr. Beck will return to St. John’s University next January to serve as a resident scholar at the Institute for Ecumenical and Cultural Research for the spring semester. Dr. Beck will be on sabbatical from Lyon College next spring.
As a resident scholar, she will conduct research, write, and discuss her work with other scholars. Each resident scholar delivers a public lecture during their residency.
