Bondurant to present Williamson Prize Lecture Tuesday
Dr.
A. Barrie Bondurant, associate professor of psychology, will present the 2002-03
Lamar Williamson Prize Lecture at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 11, in Nucor. Her
lecture is titled “Telling Secrets: Women, Men, and Acquaintance Rape.”
Dr. Bondurant was announced as the winner of the Excellence in Teaching award at commencement exercises last May.
The Williamson Prize is given annually by Lyon to the faculty member deemed to be most outstanding in four categories: professional competence, scholarly ability, exemplary humane and Christian values, and contributions to the community.
Bondurant is the 23rd Lyon professor to receive the prize, which was established in 1979 by the Lyon Board of Trustees in memory of Lamar Williamson (1887-1974) of Monticello, Arkansas. A distinguished lawyer, businessman and civic and Presbyterian Church leader, Williamson attended Lyon College from 1901-1903 and remained a friend of the college the rest of his life.
Bondurant joined the Lyon faculty in 1996 as an assistant professor of psychology. She was granted tenure and promoted to associate professor in February. Before coming to Lyon, she was an acting assistant professor at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in Lynchburg, Virginia, and an adjunct instructor for the Department of Behavioral Sciences at High Point University in North Carolina. She also served as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
She received her Ph.D. and master’s degree from UNC-Greensboro, majoring in social/personality psychology. She also holds a master’s degree from Appalachian State University at Boone, North Carolina, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Her research interests include gender issues and interpersonal aggression, including sexual victimization/sexual aggression, domestic violence and sexual harassment.
She has published nine articles in scholarly publications and is a frequent presenter at professional conferences. She has been a consulting editor of Psychology of Women Quarterly since 2001 and has served as an ad hoc reviewer for that publication and others. She is a member of the American Psychological Association, the Southeastern Psychological Association and the American Association of University Women.
She has served on numerous college committees and is a faculty adviser for the Black Students Association and for Students Acting for Empowerment (SAFE). In the community, she is a member of the Family Violence Prevention Board and the Independence County Humane Society Board. She also has been a volunteer for United Way and other community projects.

Students from area schools will compete in 11 categories. The Old Independence Regional Museum will present a special award for a project, and a teacher of the year will be selected.
Judging will take place in the morning and an awards ceremony will be held at 1:30 p.m. in Nucor Auditorium in the Lyon Building.

First state champs to be honored
Lyon College will commemorate the 65th anniversary of its first basketball championship with a reunion and ceremony honoring the 1938 team Saturday at the final regular season game of the 2002-03 basketball season at Becknell.
The game, in which the Scots take on Trevecca Nazarene, starts at 4 p.m. Surviving team members and families will be introduced at halftime. There will be a reception for the former players and their families after the game.
The 1938 team was known as the Arkansas College Panthers. The name of the basketball team was changed to the Scots in 1944 and Arkansas College became Lyon College in 1994.
The Panthers defeated Arkansas State Teachers College (now the University of Central Arkansas) 57-51 to win the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) state tournament in February 1938.
