Rev. McSpadden appointed to college chaplain position

The Rev, Nancy K. McSpadden has been appointed chaplain at Lyon College. She began her duties last Friday.

“I am looking forward to fulfilling my call to serve as chaplain at Lyon,” Rev. McSpadden said. “This area has always been special to me, and I feel in many ways like I have come home.”

Rev. McSpadden’s father was from Izard County and her great-grandfather, A.C. Evans, was the founding pastor of the Barren Fork Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Mount Pleasant.

“We are very pleased to have Nancy join us as college chaplain,” said Dr. Bruce Johnston, vice president for student life. “She brings years of experience in the church and seminary, and I look forward to her leadership in campus ministry at Lyon.”

Rev. McSpadden, who was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1996, has been serving as associate pastor of Cumber-land Presbyterian Church of Germantown, Tennessee, since 1999. Prior to that, she was dean of chapel at Memphis Theological Seminary, where she also served on the Seminary library staff.

She previously served as director of Christian education at United Methodist Churches in Magnolia, Monticello, Russellville and Donelson, Tennessee.

She holds a Master of Divinity degree (Summa Cum Laude) from Memphis Theological Seminary and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bethel College in McKenzie, Tennessee. She also completed requirements for Arkansas Teacher’s Certification at Arkansas Tech University in Russellville.

At Memphis Theological Seminary, she was awarded the Mary Eliot Miller award for outstanding woman student and was selected by the faculty to receive the award for academic excellence in New Testament studies. She also served as president of the Student Senate her senior year and was student liaison to the MTS Board of Trustees.

Baltimore Consort to perform tonight

The West Endowed Concert Series at Lyon College will feature The Baltimore Consort in performance at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the Bevens Music Room of Brown Chapel. The public is invited and admission will be free.

The Baltimore Consort, an acclaimed early music ensemble, will perform a selection of early Scottish music.

The Dan C. and Sidney Childs West Endowment was established by Dr. and Mrs. West in May 1981 for the purpose of offering live musical performances or stringed instrument instruction at Lyon College. The West Concert Endowment has supported free concerts on campus by fine musicians such as Trio Cassatt, The Quapaw Quartet and the Guild Trio. Dr. West was president of Lyon College from 1972 to 1988.

Ashley-Lewis Concert scheduled

The Ashley-Lewis Concert Series at Lyon College will present a trio of St. Louis musicians in a performance at 7:30 p.m. Friday, February 14, in Bevens Music Room of Brown Chapel.

The program is free and open to the public.

Christine Armistead, soprano, and M. Noel Prince, mezzo-soprano, will perform a varied program of vocal duets and solos, accompanied by pianist Scott Schoonover.

The musical selections will include works by Purcell, Mozart, Massenet, Berlioz, and Tchaikovsky.

Armistead has been a member of the voice faculty at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, since 1988, and has performed extensively in recital, oratorio and opera.

Prince is a full-time voice teacher at Washington University and an adjunct voice faculty member at Webster University, also in St. Louis.

Schoonover is founder, artistic director and conductor of Union Avenue Opera Theatre in St. Louis. He also serves as music director for Union Avenue Church and conducts the St. Louis Women’s Chorale.

The Ashley-Lewis Concert and Recital Series was endowed in 1982 by a gift from Jewel Ann Price Ashley in honor of her husband, Dr. John D. Ashley, a Newport physician, and in memory of her two sons, John Nicholas Lewis III and Mark Price Lewis.

Mrs. Ashley’s purpose in establishing the concert series was to recognize her husband’s strong interest in music, art, and the humanities, and to bring master organists, string ensembles, and other musicians to Lyon College and the Batesville and Newport communities.

The shadow knows!

Actually, “The shadows know Foote,” is a more apropos label for this trio of (left to right), Jeremy Burba of Batesville, Clarinda Foote, Lyon director of personnel, and Courtney Magness of Newark. Both Burba and Magness are participants in the Job Shadowing Program (Groundhog Day), part of the Department of Workforce Education’s focus to prepare students for the workforce of the 21st Century. Lyon College participates in this initiative by serving as a “workplace host,” and Foote serves as the “workplace coordinator.” Typically, high school juniors spend between four and eight hours “shadowing” a leader in their chosen profession.

Browder receives research grant

Dr. Sally Browder, associate professor of psychology, has received a research grant from the Arkansas Biomedical Research Infrastructure Net-work (AR BRIN).

The title of the study is “Depressive Symptom Patterns Among Middle and Older Adults in Primary Care Settings.”

Dr. Browder will be collaborating with Dr. Marisue Cody, associate director and research health scientist with the Center for Mental Health and Outcomes Research at the North Little Rock Veterans Administration Medical Center. Dr. Cody also is an assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

“The purpose is to study the qualitatively different ways depressive symptoms reveal themselves as people age,” Dr. Browder explained. “This research arises from observations that the assessment of depression in the elderly is complicated by its being masked by other medical conditions, by differences in reporting styles among the elderly, and by the prevalence of symptoms not traditionally associated with the diagnosis of depression.

“This research project will generate preliminary data to be used in support of a longitudinal study exploring changes in symptom patterns over time and will provide a platform for Lyon College students to become involved in field research in health psychology.”
