Lyon celebrates Black History Month

Arthur Montgomery, supervisor of the Arkansas Employment Security Division in Batesville, spoke at the Lyon College Black Students Association’s annual Black History Month Banquet February 15. The Banquet’s theme was “Remembering the Journey.”

Montgomery spoke about his personal journey as a child growing up in Batesville. Montgomery said that in 1964 he was discouraged from attending Lyon, but in 1997 he was able to attend his son Andy’s graduation. His father, Savoy Montgomery, was also in attendance. With tears in his eyes, Montgomery concluded with words of encouragement, saying that the journey is not over, and that education is often a deciding factor.

The Alumnus of the Year Award was presented to Mrs. Lou Ann George ’77. George is a geography teacher at Batesville Junior High School.

Lyon Dean of Students Bruce Johnston presented the Dr. Jane Fagg Scholarship, an annual award, to BSA Vice President Brandi Yarberry.

The annual Friend of BSA Award was presented to Dr. Tom Carpenter, one of BSA’s faculty sponsors.

Dr. Whitfield co-authors book

Dr. Patricia T. Whitfield, the Rountree Caldwell Bryan Professor of Education, has co-authored a book, “Widening the Circle: Culturally Relevant Pedagogy for American Indian Children,” published recently by Routledge Press.

The book is co-authored with Dr. Beverly Klug of Idaho State University.

The publisher says, “Recognizing the need for a pedagogy that better serves American Indian children, ‘Widening the Circle’ constructs a culturally relevant model of teaching that blends native and non-native world views and methods. Among the building blocks of this new pedagogy are the use of oral histories to supplement traditional text and a re-evaluation of the knowledge base these students need for academic success.”

Both Dr. Whitfield and Dr. Klug have had considerable experience in working with American Indian students.
