Lyon trustee is new moderator-elect
The Synod of the Sun serves Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas and is comprised of eleven presbyteries with 900 congregations containing 200,000 Presbyterians. Ford has been the pastor of the Newport congregation since 1977. Born in England, he emigrated to the U.S. in the 1950s and earned his Divinity degree from Austin (Texas) Presbyterian Theological Seminary in 1975. His more recent leadership in the church includes serving as moderator of Arkansas Presbytery in 1999. “Alan’s leadership is most welcome and appreciated by the synod,” said the Rev. Judy Record Fletcher, Synod Executive. “He will be active in decision-making during this two-year term, at the end of which he will be installed as moderator of synod for two years.” The Synod of the Sun serves as a network and provider of resources for 11 areas called presbyteries. Arkansas Presbytery serves 95 congregations in the northern two-thirds of the state. The synod also supports multicultural and higher education ministries in the region. Holiday potluck for faculty, staff is Dec. 23 The faculty and staff traditional holiday potluck meal is scheduled for noon Tuesday, December 23, in the Lower Union in Edwards Commons. Gayle Silberhorn is in charge of coordinating the meal. Watch the announcements page for meal preparation information. Lyon professor receives AR-BRIN equipment grant
Dr. Floyd Beckford, an assistant professor of chemistry at Lyon College, has received a $25,331 supplemental grant from the Arkansas Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network.
Beckford said he will use the grant to purchase two instruments that will facilitate his development of inorganic compounds that could possibly be used as anticancer agents.
One of the pieces of equipment is a UV/VIS/NIR spectrophotometer. This instrument uses ultraviolet, visible, or near-infrared light to give scientists a look at the structure and behavior of chemical substances, including DNA and other proteins.
The other instrument is an electrochemical analyzer. This piece is used in many applications related to inorganic chemicals. Beckford will use it to investigate the target anticancer compounds and their interactions with DNA.
AR BRIN is funded through the National Institutes of Health under the NIH’s Institutional Development Award program. The IDA program was established to broaden the geographic distribution of NIH funding for biomedical and behavioral research.
AR BRIN’s goals are to expand biomedical research opportunities for undergraduate faculty and students, stimulate more biomedical research proposals from Arkansas scientists and advance statewide expertise in bioinformatics, genomics, proteomics, and digital microscopy.
