Baltimore Consort to perform West Concert
The West Endowed Concert Series at Lyon College will
feature The Baltimore Consort in performance at 7:30 p.m. Friday, February 7, in
the Bevens Music Room of Brown Chapel. The public is invited and admission will
be free.
The Baltimore Consort, an acclaimed early music ensemble, will perform a selection of early Scottish music.
Founded in 1980 to perform the instrumental music of Shakespeare’s time, The Baltimore Consort has explored English, Scottish and French popular music of the 16th to 18th centuries, focusing on the relationship between folk and art music. Recordings on the Dorian label have earned them recognition as Billboard’s Top Classical-Crossover Artist of the Year, as well as rave reviews elsewhere.
The Dan C. and Sidney Childs West Endowment was established by Dr. and Mrs. West in May 1981 for the purpose of offering live musical performances or stringed instrument instruction at Lyon College. The West Concert Endowment has supported free concerts on campus by fine musicians such as Trio Cassatt, The Quapaw Quartet and the Guild Trio. Dr. West was president of Lyon College from 1972 to 1988.

Lyon College to display 'About Face' portrait collection
A traveling exhibition from the Arkansas Arts Center will be on display at Kresge Gallery at Lyon from February 1-28.
The exhibition, called “About Face,” is from the portrait collection of Jackye and Curtis Finch Jr. of Little Rock. About 25 drawings by outstanding 20th century artists will be on display.
An opening reception will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 4, in Kresge Gallery, in the Alphin Building. Mrs. Finch is expected to be a special guest at the reception.
Townsend Wolfe, former director of the Arts Centers, has said, “The collection explores not only the face as an image, but more importantly, as a means to better understand the world of drawings and art. We are challenged to grasp both the character and the humanity of the subjects as well as that of the artist.”
The works on paper are drawn with a variety of tools and materials, including pen and ink, graphite, watercolor, conte’ crayon, oil stick and silverpoint.
Mr. Finch, a retired Little Rock businessman, began collecting drawings more than 20 years ago when he was a trustee of the Arts Center. The works that will be on display at Lyon are only a representative sampling of the Finches’ larger collection.
Kresge Gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
