President's Convocation is Tuesday

The annual President’s Convocation will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 10, in Brown Chapel.

This year’s convocation, to be held the day before the anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York and Washington, D.C., will provide an opportunity to reflect on that day and the events that have since transpired.

In addition, the winners of the President’s Cup and Mr. and Ms. Lyon College will be announced. The campus community also will recognize the 2001-02 recipient of the Williamson Prize for Excellence in Teaching, Dr. Barrie Bondurant.

Vesper Service, commemorating 9/11

A special vesper service in remembrance of 9/11 will be held at 9 p.m. Wednesday, September 11, outside the Small Chapel. This will be held in lieu of the regular Thursday morning chapel service.

The vesper service will feature special music, prayer, and faculty speakers.

For more information, call Shannon Schoeller, x7505.

All campus picnic, raft race

Splish, splash! Faculty members Nikki Yonts and John Weinzierl didn’t take a bath in last Monday’s exciting raft race at Bryan Lake. The intrepid duo paddled quickly — and safely — across the lake in their worthy craft, Faculty Fury.

Scots soccer draws good crowd

Another good crowd turned out to watch the Scots soccer team take on Freed-Hardeman in the first weekend match for the first-year team.

The Scots kept it close in the first half, tied 1-1 at the break, but the Lions of Freed-Hardeman pulled ahead in the second half to take a 4-1 victory over the Scots.

The Scots tied the score midway through the first half when Michael Mumert scored on a rebound shot.

The Scots got more shots on goal (15-9) but the Lions made the best of their opportunities.

The Scots will visit Freed-Hardeman September 30 in Henderson, Tennessee, for a rematch. Saturday’s game did not count in the TranSouth standings, but the September 30 match will.

The Scots are 0-2 for the season and will travel to Walnut Ridge Saturday to take on Williams Baptist College.

Pipers volleyball season opens with victory

The Pipers opened their season Tuesday night by sweeping Ouachita Baptist 3-24, 30-23, 30-21 at Arkadelphia. It was a successful debut for Michele Jacobs, the new head volleyball coach.

Ceca Brckalo, a sophomore transfer from the University of Arkansas - Little Rock, led the Pipers with 16 kills. Sophomore Yllen Rosales led with 32 assists. Freshman Susie Harper had the most digs, with 17.

Kim Ricker had eight kills and 12 digs; Tara Carnahan added six kills and Holly Elliott had five kills and nine digs.

The Pipers will play today and Saturday (Sept. 6-7) in the Spring Hill Tournament in Mobile, Alabama.

The team’s first home game will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 14, against Lambuth University.

Intramural co-ed tennis league forming

An intramural co-ed tennis league will meet at 6 p.m. every Tuesday from September 17 to October 8 at the Lyon tennis courts. The league is free and sororities and fraternities can earn points.

The deadline to submit rosters is September 12. They should be e-mailed to Be Pham at bpham@lyon.edu.

Individuals not putting together a team can e-mail Pham to be placed on one. Teams consist of three males and three females.

To earn Greek points, two of three players must be from the same organization.
