Lyon enrollment increases again

Lyon College’s enrollment has increased for the fourth consecutive year.

The total headcount of 538, the highest in six years, is an increase of about two percent over last fall. The full-time equivalent (FTE) enrollment is 503, also an increase over last year.

This year’s entering class reversed a trend in recent years by having more male students than female. Of the new students, 58 percent are male and 42 percent are female. Overall, women students still outnumber the male students, 52 percent to 48 percent.

The number of full-time students remained steady this fall, with 485 enrolled full-time compared to 486 last fall. Lyon welcomed 143 new students this fall.

Geographically, 13.6 percent of Lyon’s enrollment this fall is from Batesville, and 82 percent is from Arkansas. International students account for six percent of Lyon’s student population this fall.
Service Day 2002

An army of more than 370 Lyon students, faculty, and staff members rocked the Batesville/Independence County area in an explosion of goodwill on Wednesday’s 13th annual Service Day community service endeavor. Hauling everything from rakes to wheelbarrows, volunteers divided into groups and headed out to help their community at approximately 33 area sites.

Harlequin Theatre to present 'The Memory of Water'

“The Memory of Water” by Shelagh Stephenson is this year’s Harlequin Theatre fall production. The play will be presented in the Holloway Theatre at 8 p.m. Friday, October 25, through Monday, October 28.

This play follows the life of Mary and her two sisters as they deal with the death of their mother, men, and each other.

The following Lyon students have roles in the fall production: Ellie Sims, Megan Osborn, Rachel Minyard, Kristy Barrington, Jack Lofton, and Zac Cunningham.

All Lyon faculty, staff, and students are admitted free. For reservations call 793-1749.

The production will also be performed at the state festival of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival.

LATEC teacher education orientation

Students aspiring to be teachers are invited to an orientation for Lyon’s nationally accredited Liberal Arts Teacher Education Concentration on Monday, September 30, at noon in the Union Conference Room.

Bring your lunch and learn about the program and opportunities in the teaching field.

For more information, contact the director of teacher education, Dr. Patricia T. Whitfield, Rountree Caldwell Bryan Professor of Education.

Bank to provide additional money in ATM

Toward the end of last school year, the administration of Lyon College along with First Community Bank installed an ATM (Automatic Teller Machine) in Edwards Dining Hall outside the bookstore.

Many students and faculty have found it very convenient to have an ATM located on campus to access their banking accounts.

Since the school year was almost over when the ATM machine was installed, First Community Bank is having a promotion to advertise the availability of the ATM machine.

During the month of October, extra cash will be placed in the ATM machine. Don’t be surprised if you receive a $50 bill instead of a $20 or a $20 instead of a $10. A total of $500 extra cash will be placed in the ATM machine.

First Community Bank is proud to partner with Lyon College in bringing added services to the students and faculty of Lyon College.
Author Lynne Knight visits Lyon

Lynne Knight, nationally published author and college professor, speaks to a group of 36 students, faculty, and staff at Tuesday’s “Writer’s Life” interview and lunchtime talk in the Lyon Building Flanders Reading Room. In the clear, measured tones of her northeastern brogue, Knight discussed literary techniques, answered questions from her audience, and encouraged her listeners to “write daily.”
