Lyon College Soccer Team beginning to take form

Jeremy Bishop, head men’s soccer coach at Lyon College, has been very busy since he took the job in late February. Coach Bishop has signed 14 soccer players from around the state to play for the Scot’s inaugural soccer team. The new signees are:

Robert Kaloghirou - Robert is a defender from Jonesboro. While at Jonesboro High School he was the team captain from 2000-2002 and earned All-Region honors in 2001. He was also a member of the Honor Roll from 2000-2002.

Peter Smith - Peter is a midfielder from Sherwood. While at Sylvan Hills High School he was an All-Conference performer from 1999-2002 and All Region in 2001-2002.

Aaron Causey - Aaron is a midfielder from Sherwood. He has served as the team captain at Sylvan Hills High School from 2001-2002. He has also received All-State honors in 2001 and All-Conference in 2002. He holds the career assist record at Sylvan Hills.

Joey Nottingham - Joey is a forward from Little Rock. He is an All-State performer from Catholic High School’s 2002 State Championship team. He was named Catholic High School’s Offensive Player of the Year. He also was on the Club Soccer State Champion-ship team in 2000 and 2001 and played in the Olympic Development Program in 2001-2002.

Bobby Rowley - Bobby is a defender from Conway. He was the team captain for Conway High School this past season.

Danny Russell - Danny is a forward from Maumelle. He attended Central Arkansas Christian where he was the team captain from 2001-2002 and earned All-Region honors in 2001 and 2002. He is also an Eagle Scout and member of the National Honor Society.

Brett Maune - Brett is a defender from North Little Rock. He attended North Little Rock High School where he was a member of the National Honor Society and the Honor Roll in 2000-2002. Before attending NLR High School, he went to Central Arkansas Christian, where he was the team MVP in 2001. He has also played on the Club Soccer State championship team in 2000 and 2001 and the Olympic Development Pro-gram (ODP) team in 2000.

Jacob Mattern - Jacob is a midfielder from Mountain Home. While at Mountain Home High School, he earned All-State honors in 2002 and All-Region in 2001 and 2002. He was the Bombers assist leader in 2002 and was named Mountain Home Best All-Around in 2001.

Michael Mumert - Michael is a midfielder from Sherwood. While at Sylvan Hills High School he earned All-Region honors in 2002 and was named the team’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2002.

Stuart Swearingen - Stuart is a forward from Mountain Home. He was named All-State and All-Region in 2002 for Mountain Home High School and received the team’s Hustle Award in 2002.

Chris Watkins - Chris is a midfielder from Sherwood. He received All-State honors in 2001 and All-Conference in 2002 while at Sylvan Hills High School. He was also a member of the National Honor Society and named to the Honor Roll from 2000-2002.

Brent Hugg - Brent is a goalkeeper from Little Rock. He went to Catholic High School and was a member of the 2002 State Championship team. He was also a member of the 2001 Honor Roll.

Michael Freeman - Michael is a goalkeeper from Little Rock. He earned All-State honors in 2002 and All-Region in 2000, while attending Arkansas Baptist High School. He was also named Distinguished Christian Athlete in 2001-2002, All-American Scholar in 2002, USAA Scholar in 2002, Who’s Who Among High School Students, and a member of the Honor Roll in 2000-2002.

Eric Wilson - Eric is a defender from Little Rock. He attended Catholic High School where he was a member of the 2002 State Championship team and was named the team’s Defensive Player of the Year. His club soccer team won the State Championship in 2000 and 2001 and he was a member of an Olympic Developmental Program (ODP) team in 2001 and 2002.

“Each one of these guys were recruited because of their abilities on the field and in the classroom,” Bishop said. “I feel that this first class of recruits will set our standards at a very high level and will make us competitive in the very difficult TranSouth Conference immediately.”

Summer orientation for Class of 2006

Lyon will welcome students and parents of this year’s freshman class at a summer orientation Friday, June 14. Thirty-four students are expected to attend. The students will be introduced to their mentors, have their ID picture taken, get parking permits and have an opportunity to receive assistance with business office matters, computer services and financial aid.

 

S.A.F.A.R.I. 2002

Melissa Cooper, director of Lyon College’s S.A.F.A.R.I., greets students at the opening day of this summer’s first session on Monday. The program, which provides different fun and educational classes for students in kindergarten through seventh grade, has approximately 90 students enrolled for both sessions.
