Arkansas Scottish Festival returns April 26-28

Sitting on the southeast corner of the Lyon campus is a quiet intramural field. But soon it won’t be so quiet. It will become Braemar Field, the home of Lyon’s Arkansas Scottish Festival.

The air will be filled with the sounds of bagpipes and drums for the 23rd year on Friday, April 26 through Sunday, April 28.

Events for the festival begin on Friday night with The Big Show, the student talent show, in Brown Chapel.

On Saturday, festival attendees will have three separate stages to choose from ranging from watching the Highland Dance competition on the main festival stage, listening to the folk singing of Alex Beaton on the Coca-Cola Edinburgh Tent stage or enjoying the sounds of The Boatrights at the Grigsby House.

Attendees can also roam the field, browsing the vendor booths that sell Scottish wares. Or they can visit with the various clan booths and trace their family lineage.

On Saturday morning, individual piping and drumming competitions take place at various locations around the competition field. In the afternoon, band competitions will take place on Braemar Field after the opening ceremonies that includes a march of the clans and massed bands.

For the sports minded, the Highland athletic competition at Killiecranke Field provides the opportunity for men and women to test their strength. The men compete in the caber toss (think of carrying and then tossing half a telephone pole so that it does one complete rotation), sheaf toss, stone put, weight for height, weight for distance and hammer throw. The women compete in the caber toss, stone put, weight for height, weight for distance and rolling pin events.

Throughout Saturday, there will be sheepdog demonstrations, sponsored by Kirchner Architects of Little Rock, on the south end of Braemar Field. There will also be Ozark crafts and demonstrations surrounding the Grigsby House, a log cabin from the 1800s. The traditional artisans and craftsmen demonstrate their work, using the tools that would have been used in the 1800s.

There will be plenty of food on hand throughout the festival. Campus student organizations will be selling a variety of foods. Traditional Scottish food also will be available.

And for those that don’t get enough food during the day, they can experience a traditional Feast and Ceilidh. Get a good taste of Scotland during the feast and be entertained during the Ceilidh by the piper and dancer of the day as well as the Lyon Pipe Band. There will also be a cocktail reception prior to the feast.

On Sunday morning, the festival takes time for another Scottish tradition, the Iona Worship Service. The lakeside service is based on a traditional Scottish service from the Isle of Iona.

A lighthearted tradition will also be held on Sunday, the Bonniest Knees Contest.

There for a new event at the festival this year – a piping trio contest. The audience is the judge as piping trios compete for prize money.

All booths will be open throughout the day on Sunday. The Boatrights and Alex Beaton will also perform again.

Sports

Baseball

The Scots split a doubleheader with the University of Central Arkansas at home Tuesday. UCA won the first game 16-9 and Lyon took the second game 7-2.

Chris Scarborough gave up only five hits and pitched a complete game to get the win in the nightcap. Jason Causey went four for four with two RBI for the Scots in the second game.

The Scots won two of three conference games from Trevecca Nazarene last weekend. The Trojans won last Friday’s opener 11-1 but the Scots came back to win the second game 10-9 and followed up on Saturday with a 4-2 win.

Pitching in relief on Friday, Phillip May won his 10th game versus only one defeat for the season. Adam Davis also picked up a win on Saturday with a 7-inning 3-hitter. The second game scheduled for Saturday was rained out and will not be made up.

Lyon is 24-20 for the year and 8-7 in the conference. The Scots are scheduled to host Union University in conference doubleheaders Friday and Saturday on the home field. Games begin at noon each day.

Golf

The Piper golf team defeated the Evangel University Lady Crusaders 354-365. The 11-stroke victory was the Pipers first of the spring. Piper freshman, Adriane Barnett, finished second with a team low round of 79. The match was played at the Springfield Golf and Country Club, in Springfield, Missouri.

Tennis

The Pipers upset 16th-ranked Freed-Hardeman 5-4 at home on March 28 in what Coach Be Pham called “a huge conference win.”

The pivotal match occurred at the No. 5 singles position when Reagan Greeno fought back from losing the first set to win the next two and the match. Paulette Pearson clinched the team victory with an easy 6-0, 6-1 win in the No. 2 singles slot.

Coach Pham said “it was a total team effort that allowed Lyon to win.” Pearson and Megan Osborn won their double match 8-1 and Anne Carter and Greeno won their match by forfeit. Osborn also took a singles win by forfeit.

The Pipers continued their dominance over the University of the Ozarks in winning 6-2 Tuesday in Clarksville. The Pipers improve to 5-7.

The teams of Nicolette Preiser and Taylor Preiser and Reagan Greeno and Laura Higginbottom won their doubles matches. The Preisers, Greeno, Laura Higginbottom and Megan Osborn won singles matches.

The Scots picked up their first victory over Ozarks and their third of the season with a 6-3 win on Tuesday. Jonathan Thompson and Cory Mc-Daniel fought back from a 1-6 deficit to win 9-7. Juan Herrera beat Ozark’s top player at the No. 1 singles position.

Herrera and Will Reed won their doubles contest and Daniel Moses, Reed and McDaniel also racked up singles victories.

“The team played one of its best matches of the year and continues to improve with every match,” Pham said.

The Scots lost to 13th-ranked Freed-Hardeman 6-0 on March 28. Freed-Hardeman is one of the favorites to win the TranSouth Conference this year.
