McClure named head women's basketball coach at Lyon

David McClure has been appointed head coach of the women’s basketball team at Lyon College. He also will serve as director of the physical education program. He will succeed Grace McDowell, who is resigning to take a position at a school in Texas.

McClure has been assistant coach of the men’s basketball team for three years. He has also served as assistant volleyball coach and sports information director. He will be giving up those duties in his new position.

“We are pleased to promote David McClure to take over the duties of head women’s basketball coach,” said Terry Garner, director of athletics at Lyon. “David has all the qualities to bring continued success to this program.”

McClure said, “I am grateful that I have been selected to be the Pipers’ new head coach, and I’m looking forward to next season.” McClure said his coaching philosophy emphasizes “pride, fundamentals, knowledge and character.”

Originally from Gravette, McClure is a 1996 graduate of Hendrix College in Conway, where he played basketball on two NCAA Division III national tournament teams. In 1999, McClure earned his master’s degree in physical education from the University of Arkansas.

He has served as a head junior high and assistant high school coach at Lonoke and at Shiloh Christian School in Springdale.

He is married to the former Jennifer Gabel of Fayetteville, who is a registered nurse at White River Medical Center in Batesville.

“We will be ever grateful to Grace for the contributions she has made to the Lyon Athletics Program, both as a coach and a student athlete,” Garner said. “We want to wish her and her family the best as they begin their new professional careers.”

McDowell has been the Pipers’ head coach for three seasons. The Pipers’ season record this year was 11-19 and they were 3-11 in the TranSouth Conference. In 2000-01, the Pipers were 9-5 in the conference and 15-17 overall.

She is a Lyon graduate and was a standout basketball player for the Pipers. McDowell scored 1,794 points, which is the Pipers’ record for most points in a career.

McDowell will be teaching and coaching at a middle school in Frisco, Texas, north of Plano.

Her husband, Dr. Derek McDowell, also a Lyon graduate, is a professor of chemistry at Lyon. They have a daughter, Derrica, who is four years old. The family will be relocating to Texas this summer.

Rajbanshi cycles to Memphis to deliver St. Jude donation

Shajjan Rajbanshi, a junior at Lyon College, bicycled to Memphis Saturday to deliver a $2,000 donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

He left at 7 a.m. Saturday from in front of Brown Chapel.

Rajbanshi said he raised the money for St. Jude’s with the help of fellow students, faculty members and friends.

He said he expected to make the 140-mile trip to Memphis in 9-10 hours.

Fellow student David Ziegmann accompanied him by car and provided food and water along the way.

Rajbanshi is no stranger to bicycling, having won national awards in the past. He is also a member of the Lyon cross country running team. He said he has ridden as many as 250 miles at one time.

However, the native of Nepal has not been able to train for several weeks since he twisted an ankle a few weeks ago. He still felt confident he could make the trip on time.

Enjoy musical entertainment at the Arkansas Scottish Festival

The band, all family members, will perform at the Grigsby House, a traditional log cabin located on the north end of the field. Their style of music fits in perfectly with the Celtic heritage the Arkansas Scottish Festival celebrates.

Gates open at 8:30 a.m. Saturday with drumming and piping competitions beginning at 9 a.m. Gates open at 9 a.m. on Sunday. Performance times for Beaton and The Boatrights will be sprinkled throughout the day.

Lyon students attend ASC meeting in Florida

On April 6-10, five Lyon College students, Rich Ambler, Edlira Bashari, Kevin Flinn, Ben Gilbert, and Danielle Temple, along with Dr. Derek McDowell, attended the 223rd National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in Orlando, Florida. Those attending presented original results from individual research projects.

The students also represented Lyon College’s Student Affiliates of the ACS chapter by attending the ACS Student Affiliates Chapter Awards Ceremony. The chapter’s activities during the 2000-2001 academic year earned the chapter an honorable mention award.

The ACS Committee on Education selects Student Affiliates chapters to receive special recognition on the basis of their programs and activities as described in their annual reports. Awards are classified as outstanding, commendable, and honorable mention. Lyon College’s SA chapter was included in a list of honorees that included 24 outstanding, 46 commendable, and 72 honorable-mention awards. Given that there are nearly 900 SA chapters in the nation, obtaining such a national distinction is an exceptional accomplishment for the SA chapter at Lyon. The group was presented with a plaque to commemorate the national recognition. In only the chapter’s 5th year of existence, this is the third year in a row that the chapter has received such national recognition.

In addition to the Lyon psychology students listed in the March 29 edition of the Greensheet, other students and a faculty member presented their work at the 2002 Arkansas Undergraduate Research Conference at Henderson State April 19-20.
