Ozark FilmFest supported by Lyon involvement

Members of the faculty, staff, students, and alumni of Lyon College are all playing a major role in the preparations under way for the first annual Ozark Foothills FilmFest, set for April 10-14. The festival takes place at a total of six venues, five in Batesville and one in Newport, including two on campus.

Arkansas Democrat-Gazette film critic Philip Martin will answer the question “What Do We Want from the Movies,” on Friday, April 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Bevens Music Room. This original essay was written especially for the launching of the first film festival and to help introduce local audiences to the joy and variety of filmdom. Admission to Martin’s talk and the “meet and greet” that will follow is free to members of the Lyon community.

Independent filmmaker Herb E. Smith will present his newest work, “The Ralph Stanley Story,” at 6 and 8 p.m. Sunday, April 14, in Nucor Auditorium. The screenings are the culmination of a four-day retrospective of films from the Appalshop Media Center in eastern Kentucky. The Appalshop retrospective takes place Thursday through Sunday at the Old Independence Regional Museum. Dr. Brooks Blevins ’92, a visiting faculty member at Lyon last year and currently on the faculty at Ozarka Technical College, will present the Friday Appalshop program. Thanks to a grant from the Arkansas Humanities Council, all of the programs in the Appalshop retrospective are free.

JoAnne Wilkes and Lynn Rose from the Office of Institutional Advancement are working with festival executive director Judy Pest in planning a special event for Thursday evening (April 11) at the Melba Theatre. “A Forties Movie Premiere” will recreate the atmosphere of the Golden Age of Hollywood, complete with red carpet, spotlights, a Betty Boop cartoon, a George Pal Puppetoon, and a rare original print of the 1941 Technicolor classic, “The Shepherd of the Hills,” starring John Wayne.

The complete festival line-up, including membership information and ticket information for off-campus events, is available on-line at www.ozarkfoothillsfilmfest.org. Questions should be directed to pest@ipa.net or 870-251-1189.

Students to present research papers

Stephanie Saunders, Lisa Stiles, and Allison Turner are to present their research papers at the 2002 Arkansas Undergraduate Research Conference at Henderson State April 19-20.

The papers to be presented are, “Hispanic Psychology Applied to Education,” by Stephanie Saunders, a psychology and Spanish major from Salem; “Gender Equity in the Classroom and the Effects of Conscious Inhibition of Gender Bias,” by Lisa Stiles, a psychology major from Paris, Texas; and “Relationship between Achievement Motivation, Grade Point Average, and ACT Composite Scores,” by Allison Turner, a psychology major from The Woodlands, Texas.

Pyron to present paper at conference

Stacy Pyron, a Lyon College senior from Hot Springs, will present a paper at the National Conference of Undergraduate Research on April 24-26.

Her paper, titled “The Use of Text in Picasso’s Early Collages,” will be presented at the conference in White Water, Wisconsin.

The annual conference provides an opportunity for undergraduate students to present their research and answer questions about it from professors and students.

Choir performs at National Cathedral

The Lyon College Concert performed at Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., on Sunday, March 17.

The choir sang the choral prelude to the service of Holy Eucharist at 10:30 a.m. The prelude was a 25-minute program of a cappella music sung from the great crossing steps of the west balcony of the cathedral.

The opportunity to participate in the service is a rare one. Invitations to sing at the cathedral are hard to come by with the limited number of open slots being booked months in advance. Dr. Michael Arshagouni, the choir’s director, received the invitation for Lyon in November.

During the trip the choir also made several other stops, including performances at Clearview Baptist Church in Franklin, Tennessee; Westminster-Canterbury, a retirement village in Richmond, Virginia; Union Theological Seminary in Richmond; and at Alamance Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Editors needed for student publications

The Student Publications Board is now accepting applications for next year’s editors of the Highlander newspaper and Scot yearbook. The positions offer stipends and excellent pre-professional training. Application forms are available at Dr. Boling’s office in the Alphin Building.

The deadline for applying is April 8; return completed applications to Dr. Boling’s office.

Lyon Spring String Recital

The Lyon Spring String Recital will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 8, in Bevens. The recital features college and community students in recital. Featured selections will include Vivaldi’s “Spring” Concerto and works by Mozart, and Pachelbel. Free admission.

Art exhibit in Kresge Gallery

The 15th annual Small Works on Paper exhibition continues its yearlong state-wide tour in April at Lyon College. The exhibition will be on view from April 4 to April 22 in Kresge Gallery.

An opening reception will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, April 4, in Kresge Gallery.

The juried exhibition will feature 39 works by 28 Arkansas artists.

The Small Works on Paper annual competition and tour are sponsored by the Arkansas Arts Council, which is an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage.

Sports

Baseball

The Scots defeated Freed-Hardeman in three of four games played over the weekend in Henderson, Tennessee.

Lyon got three complete games from its pitchers and committed only one error.

Chuck Stracener won his fourth game of the year in Friday’s opener as the Scots won 4-3.

Phillip May got the win in the second game with a 5-3 Scot victory. May, 8-1 for the year, gave up only three hits in seven innings.

In the Saturday opener, Adam Davis went the distance and pitched a four-hitter in the 5-2 win.

Freed-Hardeman won the final game, 6-4.

Lyon is 20-17 overall and 6-6 in TranSouth Conference games.

The Scots are scheduled to be at home Friday and Saturday for doubleheaders against Union University. The games begin at noon each day.

Tennis

The Lyon College tennis teams lost conference matches Friday and Saturday.

Lee University swept both the men’s and women’s teams by identical 5-0 scores Friday in Jackson, Tennessee. The Pipers lost a close one, 5-4, at home Saturday to Evangel University.

The Pipers had their chances to win the Saturday match but dropped two close doubles matches. Paulette Pearson was the only double winner of the day, winning her two matches at the No. 2 position. Reagan Greeno battled back from trailing in her first set to win a tight tiebreaker. From there she used that momentum to cruise through the second set. Nicolette Preiser and Taylor Preiser played well in their doubles match but came up short.

In the Scots’ match against Lee, two games were forfeited because Lyon only had five players available for the trip.

The match against Arkansas Tech scheduled for Tuesday was canceled due to rain and will not be rescheduled.

Basketball players recognized

Brandon Byrd and Kyle Hill of the Scots basketball team have been recognized for basketball and academic accomplishments.

Byrd, a 6-foot-4 sophomore from Jonesboro, earned NAIA Honorable Mention All-American status. Byrd averaged 19 points while shooting 85 percent from the line and 43 percent from 3-point range.

Byrd and Hill, a senior from Kilbourne, Louisiana, were both named NAIA All-American Scholar Athletes.

Byrd is a biology (pre-med) major with a 3.85 GPA. Hill, named a scholar athlete for the second consecutive season, is also a biology major and has a 3.55 GPA.
