Overwhelming participation makes Service Day a success

Lyon faculty and staff joined with students on Wednesday, September 26, to volunteer their services to Batesville and the surrounding communities. “This looks to be a record year,” says College Chaplain Pat Baxter, “We had more volunteers this year than ever before.” Services were provided to over 39 different sites.

Poet Allison Funk visits campus; talks about writing during tragedy

The tragic events of Sept. 11 may bring about a re-emergence of poetry not only in literary circles but also in the general public, poet Allison Funk said during the Writer’s Life Luncheon on Thursday, Sept. 20.

A member of the luncheon’s audience asked Funk if poetry might see a revival of sorts in the wake of the attack, similar to how beat poetry developed during the ’60s and ’70s during the Vietnam War. He asked the question relating it to Funk’s book of poetry “Life at the Epicenter” that focused on the devastating 19th century earthquakes that shook the states along the New Madrid fault line and the surrounding states, including Mississippi.

Funk was living in Mississippi in the early 1990’s when another large earthquake was predicted, by non-scientific means Funk added, along the fault line. She became aware of the earthquakes that shook the region in the late 1800’s at this time as the history of the last major earthquakes along the fault line were discussed.

“I think it is very possible,” Funk said. “Poetry is an expression of emotion, and there is certainly quite a bit of emotion surrounding this situation. Poets may focus on it more, or it may even cause those who haven’t thought of writing a poem before to do so. It seems in times like this we tend to turn back to poetry.”

“You can have talent, but if you don’t work at it, that talent doesn’t grow. You don’t develop as a writer,” said Funk, who earned her M.F.A. in creative writing from Columbia University. “I can think of only four or five people from my class in graduate school who are writing and still publishing. Life and its circumstances can often keep a person from writing. And writing is not easy. It can be a struggle, and if your time is otherwise occupied, you may not be able to write.”

Dr. Murphy receives scholar award

Dr. Teresa Murphy, assistant professor of education, has received the 2001-2002 AILACTE (The Association of Independent Liberal Arts Colleges for Teacher Education) Scholar Award. The AILACTE Scholar Award is given to faculty members who teach in AILACTE institutions and who are in their first five years of appointment time. The award is designed to encourage scholarly study of topics related to the themes developed by the Models of Excellence Committee. Dr. Murphy proposes a study entitled “Creating a Climate of Peace: What Teachers Should Know.” Her study will involve the interviewing of high school students in order to determine the factors in the school environment which deter school violence.

The AILACTE Scholar Award carries with it a $2,500 stipend.

Dr. Murphy also has recently had an article, “Composition, Critical Think-ing, and Social Constructs: Writing about Gender,” published in the Summer 2001 Academic Exchange Quarterly.
