President Roettger reviews progress, plans for new year
Lyon College President Walter B. Roettger welcomed faculty and staff back for the 2001-02 academic year at an all-campus luncheon Wednesday, August 22, and announced that the college is anticipating a third consecutive year of enrollment growth.“Our residence halls are full,” Dr. Roettger said, “and we have the wonderful question of how to handle future overflow.”
He reviewed the recent progress made possible by the Campaign for Lyon, which concluded last year after raising more than $90 million.
“This has made possible new scholarships for our students,” he said, “and it has provided support for our academic and co-curricular programs from Campus Ministry to Spragins House.”
Dr. Roettger announced that it will provide an additional $1 million in endowment for the Nichols Travel Program that will enable the program to grow and make it possible for students to travel to additional locations.
He said it also has made possible the Derby Center for Science and Mathematics, which is currently under construction. This $11.8-million, 55,000-square-foot facility will serve all students and be home to programs in biology, chemistry, computer science, environmental studies, mathematics, physics and psychology.
He listed several other improvements in the physical plant that have been funded by a bond issue and campaign fundraising. These include:
• New tennis courts are being constructed to replace those lost to construction of the Derby Center. The new courts are adjacent to the existing courts east of Becknell Gymnasium. This will provide the college with six tennis courts, which is the benchmark to hold intercollegiate matches.
• A parcel of land near Young House has been cleared to create an attractive park-like area.
• The Nichols Administration Building has been renovated with new carpeting, painting and the installation of modular work spaces in the central area.
• In the weeks ahead, a locker area will be constructed in Becknell Gymnasium for women’s varsity sports, the public dressing rooms will be renovated, and a temporary modular building will be located east of Becknell to provide additional office space for staff.
He said the capital campaign also funded the Lyon Information Technology Initiative.
“This multi-year faculty and staff development initiative will significantly increase our effective use of instructional technology,” he said. He said the college also plans to convert to a new administrative information system in the months ahead.

In signing the Roll of Honor, each student agrees to abide by the student-run honor code and pledges to follow a high standard of honesty in all academic work. All freshmen, transfer students and new faculty members sign the Roll of Honor at the beginning of each academic year. |
