Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey to deliver Heasley Prize Lecture

Best-selling author Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey will deliver the Leila Lenore Heasley Prize Lecture on Monday, April 9. She will give a public reading of her work at 10 a.m. in Nucor Auditorium in the Lyon Building.

She will attend a Writer’s Life Luncheon at 11:50 a.m. in the Flanders Reading Room. Those attending may bring a lunch or order a boxed lunch from the college’s dining service. A prose writing workshop will be held at 2 p.m. in the Citizens Bank Room of the Lyon Building.

A play based on her novel “A Woman of Independent Means” will be performed by Donna Wallace of Batesville at 7:30 p.m. in the Bevens Music Room. Hailey will answer questions after the play. A book signing and refreshments will follow.

“A Woman of Independent Means,” Hailey’s best-selling first novel, was published when she was 40, and later adapted into a one-woman play starring Barbara Rush. In 1995, NBC adapted the play into a six-hour miniseries starring Sally Field, and Hailey’s own daughter, Brooke, played the role of Betsy, the granddaughter. It also won a Silver Medal for best first novel from the Common-wealth Club of California in 1978, and the play received a Los Angeles Drama Critics Award in 1983.

Hailey’s best-selling works continued with “Life Sentences,” “Joanna’s Husband and David’s Wife” (which she adapted as a two-character play co-starring her other daughter, Kendall), and “Home Free.”

She and her husband, Oliver Hailey, worked together writing for film and television. They collaborated as creative consultants for the television series “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.” She also was a co-producer for the CBS soap opera “Another Day” in 1977.

Hailey is a graduate of Hollins College in Roanoke, Va., and she also spent a year studying at the Sorbonne in Paris, France.

Currently, Hailey lives in Studio City, California, and works as a volunteer activist for the Women’s Care Cottage, which helps homeless women and children. She also acts as a literacy tutor for the Beverly Hills Library.
