Chemistry faculty and students attend national ACS meeting

On April 1-3, five Lyon students (Rich Ambler, Emily Blackwood, Amanda Fincher, Bethani Rydzewski, and Danielle Temple) and all three chemistry faculty members (Dr. David DeHaan, Dr. Sanjeev Manohar, and Dr. Derek McDowell) attended the 221st National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in San Diego, Calif. Those attending presented original results from individual research projects. In addition, the entire group contributed to the Successful Student Affiliates (SA) Chapter poster presentations.

The activities displayed in the SA poster were just one example of the chapters activities that helped to earn the chapter significant acclaim. The ACS Committee on Education selects Student Affiliates chapters to receive special recognition on the basis of their programs and activities as described in their annual reports. Awards are classified as outstanding, commendable, and honorable-mention. For the 1999-00 academic year, Lyon College’s SA chapter was 1 of only 31 chapters to be presented with an outstanding honor. The remaining list contained 60 commendable, and 69 honorable-mention awards. Given that there are nearly 900 SA chapters in the nation, obtaining such a distinction is an exceptional accomplishment for the SA chapter at Lyon, which is only in its 4th year of existence. The entire group attended the ACS Student Affiliates Chapter Awards Ceremony and accepted a plaque commemorating the national recognition.

The student presentations consisted of the following: Temple, a sophomore from Conway, and Manohar presented “Synthesis of polyaniline and its derivatives.” Fincher, a senior from Harrison, presented “Conformational effects on the mass spectrometry of peptides.” Ambler, a junior from Magnolia, and McDowell presented “Determination of methylmercury with SPME and capillary GC with electron capture detection.” Blackwood, a senior from Greenwood, and DeHaan presented “Exploring smog haze formation by solid-phase microextraction analysis of competitive absorption experiments.” And, Rydzewski, a senior from Little Rock, along with the rest of the group, presented “Creative ways to celebrate NCW: Dress as your favorite element.”
