A public recital will be held by Dr. Russell T. Stinson at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 20 in Brown Chapel as Lyon College celebrates his appointment as Josephine Emily Brown Professor of Music. Following the recital, Dr. Stinson will sign copies of his new book, “J. S. Bach’s Great Eighteen Organ Chorales,” (Oxford University Press, 2001) in the Bevens Music Room. Everyone is invited to attend and a buffet luncheon will be available for purchase.

Kappelle Trio to perform at Lyon

The internationally ac-claimed chamber music group the Kappelle Trio will be performing at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 15, in Brown Chapel on the Lyon College campus as part of the Batesville Concert Association’s ongoing 2000-2001 concert series.

The Kapelle Trio was formed in 1992 and has played for audiences in the U.S., Europe, and South America. Trio members are pianist Lee Phillips, cellist Felice Farrell, and violinist Kevork Mardirossian. Reviewers across the country have written about them: “...they play with fiery passion and lovely lyric warmth...fleet, accurate virtuosity,” and “This group was brilliant..the Kapelle Trio simply loves to make music.”

Tickets are free to members of the Batesville Concert Association and with Lyon ID; $10 tickets for nonmembers will be available at the door. This concert is sponsored in part by Citizens Bank of Batesville, the Arkansas Arts Council, and Batesville Area Arts Council. Physics students to present paper at 2001 Arkansas research conference

Physics minors David McCullars and Jonathan Thompson, under the direction of Juan Gomez, Assistant Professor of Physics, have been selected to present a paper at the 2001 Arkansas Undergraduate Research Conference (AURC). The title of the paper is: “Charged Particle Motion in Electric and Magnetic Fields: A Runge-Kutta Solution.”

The paper is the result of the research they have been conducting for the past two semesters. The research involved obtaining a suitable numerical solution for the Lorentz force equation.

Faculty development workshop: 'Show Me the Money!'

Lyon faculty members are invited to a March 20 faculty development workshop focusing on Arkansas grant opportunities. The workshop is scheduled from 4-6 p.m. in Lyon 100.

Featured speakers include Dr. Herb Monoson of the Arkansas Science & Technology Authority; Ms. Sandy Bennett of the Arkansas Department of Education’s Office of Gifted and Talented Education; and Lyon’s own Dr. David Stricklin, member of the Arkansas Humanities Council’s Board of Directors.

These speakers will outline various grant opportunities with their respective state organizations and offer tips on how to prepare proposals that will receive government funding.

Etiquette sessions to be held

Mrs. Bess Sanders will be on campus Tuesday and Wednesday, March 13-14, to conduct two etiquette sessions entitled, “Business Etiquette and Dress and Dining Etiquette.”

Two sessions for Business Etiquette and Dress will be held on Tuesday, 1-2:30 p.m and 3-4:30 p.m. in the Worthen Room.

Two sessions of Dining Etiquette will be held on Wednesday, 10-11:30 a.m. and 2-3:30 p.m. in the Worthen Room, followed by a dinner in Edwards Commons that evening.

You may register for these etiquette sessions until Tuesday by contacting Donna Baxter (x4264). Sessions are free and all faculty, staff, and students are welcome to attend.

District II History Day

High school and junior high students will compete in District 2 History Day at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, March 15, in Becknell Gymnasium. The winners go to the state contest and state winners go to the national competition at College Park, Maryland. Entry categories for this year are Historial Paper, Exhibit, Performance and Documentary. The theme is “Frontiers in History.”

Rev. Victor Nixon to present Charles Oliver lecture

Lyon will host the sixth bi-annual Charles Oliver Memorial Lecture on Prayer and the Spiritual Life at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 11, in the Bevens Music Room.

The Reverend Victor Nixon, pastor of Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church in Little Rock, will present the lecture.

Mr. Nixon is a well-known speaker at various camps and conferences and serves on numerous boards and agencies. His services at Pulaski Heights Methodist are widely viewed on KATV, Channel 7, on Sunday mornings. In July 2001, he will be a delegate to the 18th World Methodist Conference in England.

The Charles Oliver Lecture Series Trust was established in March 1991, to enable a series of interdenominational lectures on prayer and the spiritual life to be held during the Lenten Season.

Charles R. Oliver, Jr. was an advocate, adviser, friend, and supporter of First Presbyterian Church, Batesville, and a professor at Arkansas College, now Lyon College. From 1966 until his death in December 1989, his contributions greatly strengthened the church and college.

Regional science fair is next Friday

Lyon will host the North Central Arkansas Regional Science Fair competition Friday, March 16, in Becknell Gymnasium.

The event is for students in grades 7-12 who have won 1st-4th place in their category at their school. Exhibits will be open for public viewing from 3-5:30 p.m.; awards ceremony at 6:30 p.m.

SPORTS

Basketball

The Scots and the Pipers wrapped up the basketball season Saturday with TranSouth Conference tournament losses on the road.

The Scots made it to the semifinals before falling to Lee University 87-64 in Cleveland, Tennessee. They won their first-round tournament game against Martin Methodist 73-69 March 1. Thomas Rost and Billy Linson were both named to the all-conference second team. Brandon Byrd was named to the all-conference freshman team. The Scots ended the year at 11-18 overall and 6-6 in the conference.

The Pipers ended their season in Jackson, Tennessee, losing to Union University 71-58 in the second round of the conference tournament. Sarah Meier and Melissa Allen were named to the all-conference first team and Gretchen Hall was named to the all-conference second team. The Pipers were 15-17 for the season and 9-5 in the conference.

Baseball

The Scots baseball team resume play at 2 p.m. Friday (today) when they host Lipscomb University at Scots Field. On Saturday, Lyon and Lipscomb will play a doubleheader beginning at noon.

Games next week include a matchup with Central Baptist at noon on Monday and against Delta State at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Both games will be at Scots Field.
