Williamson Prize Lecture: Teresa Burns Murphy

Williamson Prize winner Teresa Burns Murphy, assistant professor of education, will present a lecture entitled, “Are the Kids All Right? The Violence of Language in America’s Schools,” at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 3, in Nucor Auditorium.

The presentation will include information about critical elements necessary for establishing a climate of peace among adolescents in America’s Schools. Data reported by students, veteran teachers, and pre-service teachers on incendiary language’s potential to spark incidents of aggression will be addressed. Everyone is invited to attend.

Lyon students to present papers at 2001 state research conference

Two additional Lyon students will be presenting papers at the 2001 Arkansas Undergraduate Research Conference (AURC) which is scheduled for April 20-21.

Kathy Cater, under the direction of Dr. David Stricklin, will be presenting a paper entitled “Quakers and Slavery.” Jeremy Christian, under the direction of Dr. Sally Browder, will also present a paper entitled “Optimism and Relations to Personality Dimensions.”

In addition, Kathy Cater will also be presenting a paper, “The Inhumanity of Slavery and the Limits of American Freedom,” at the regional conference of Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honor society. This conference will be held on March 31 at Arkansas Tech in Russellville.

Dr. Russell Stinson, newly appointed Josephine Emily Brown Professor of Music, autographs copies of his new book, “J.S. Bach’s Great Eighteen Organ Chorales,” at a book signing after a performance given by him Tuesday in Brown Chapel.

Organ donation awareness program

An organ donation awareness program will be presented at 7 p.m. Monday (March 26) in Nucor Auditorium in the Lyon Building.

Several members of the Lyon College community either have family members in need of transplants, have donated an organ, have received an organ or have a family history of an illness that could lead to a need for a transplant.

The public is invited to the program, which is intended to bring awareness about this important issue to the campus and the Batesville community issue.

Participants in the program will include Keith Maddison of Little Rock, who is with the Arkansas Regional Organ Recovery Agency (ARORA), and Truman Hall, a heart transplant recipient from Bee Branch. David Wilkey, the recipient of two kidney transplants, and Deborah Sisson, a kidney donor, will also speak.

There will be open discussion and materials available.

Lyon hosted District II History Day on Thursday, March 15, in Becknell Gymnasium. Participating in the event were 113 high school and junior high students from six area schools. The theme was “Frontiers in History.”

Self-defense program scheduled

Young House and RLS have arranged for a Personal Safety and Self-Defense Program from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 27, in the Small Gym in Becknell. It is open to the entire campus community, so everyone is invited to attend.

John Chiaramonte of the APPLE Project will be leading the program. He holds a brown belt in Kenpo Karate and has considerable experience in the area of self-defense instruction. The program will consist of preventative personal safety issues, as well as the legal and moral ramifications on whether or not to carry a weapon. Basic scenarios will be introduced, and useful holds and grabs will be demonstrated.

Spring production

The Theatre Department will present the Spring production, “The Year Boston Won The Pennant,” by John Ford Noonan at 8 p.m. April 5-7 and at 2 p.m. April 8, in Holloway Theatre.

All students, faculty, and staff are entitled to one free admission. Call x1749 for reservations. This production is intended for mature audiences only.
