Lyon College reaches lofty fund-raising goal

Dr. Walter Roettger (from left) visits with Howard House of Batesville and Board of Trustees member Dudley K. Flanders of Fort Smith during a reception at the Country Club of Little Rock Wednesday night. The reception was held to celebrate the completion of the Campaign for Lyon.

Lyon College officials announced Wednesday that the Batesville institution has surpassed its fund-raising goal, raising more than $90 million in a five-year campaign that concluded in December.

Lyon’s “Fulfilling the Promise” campaign had a goal of $80 million, making it one of the largest ever for a college of its size. It not only met but exceeded this goal, thanks in large part to a $10 million challenge gift by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lyon Jr. of Little Rock. The college raised about $17 million during the final year of the campaign.

“We launched this extraordinary campaign to help us build and sustain for future generations a liberal arts college that would be among the finest in the land,” said Dr. Walter B. Roettger, president of Lyon. “This vision captured the imagination of friends and alumni as well as leaders of the business and civic communities who understand its importance in personal growth, professional success and regional development. This is a wonderful story about a promise made and fulfilled by men and women who care about education of the highest quality and about those values that matter most: courage, integrity, ingenuity and responsibility.”

The successful conclusion of the campaign was celebrated at a dinner held Wednesday night in Little Rock. Attending the dinner were members of the college’s Board of Trustees, who had held their regular winter meeting earlier in the day, along with donors, friends and special guests.

The money raised in the campaign supports endowed faculty positions, special academic and student life programs, and scholarships. It also includes funds for capital projects.

Lyon College kicked off the “Fulfilling the Promise” campaign in 1995 to help it achieve its goal of becoming a college of national distinction. As of December 1999, the college had raised just over $73 million. Then in January 2000 Jane and Frank Lyon Jr. announced the Lyon Leadership Challenge, pledging to match dollar for dollar any new gift made to the college for any purpose that year.

“It was Frank and Jane Lyon’s generous leadership commitment that allowed us to exceed the original goal by more than $10 million,” said Tracy Branson, the college’s vice president for institutional advancement. “The challenge match applied to every donation made last year, from the smallest annual fund contribution to the largest endowment gift. It inspired friends and alumni and propelled the campaign during the final 12 months.”

Mr. Lyon, president of Arkansas Irrigation Co. and Wingmead, Inc., is a member of the college’s board of trustees and was honorary national chairman of the campaign.
