Symposium on environmental issues planned

The Lyon College Convocations Committee has scheduled two convocations next week as part of a symposium on environmental issues. The programs are open to the public and admission is free.

The first panel discussion, “The Environment, Economics and the Law,” will be at 7 p.m. Monday, November 5, in Nucor Auditorium in the Lyon Building.

Panelists will be Dr. Judith Lloyd, professor of environmental chemistry at the State University of New York at Old Westbury; Dr. James Roumasset, an environmental economist from the University of Hawaii; and Herbert C. Rule III, an attorney with the Rose Law Firm in Little Rock. Dr. Scott Roulier, assistant professor of political science at Lyon, will serve as moderator.

Dr. Lloyd will talk about air pollution and the government’s air monitoring procedures. Dr. Roumasset will discuss the cost of pollution-control strategies and the Bush Administration’s environmental policies. Mr. Rule, who is also a member of the Lyon Board of Trustees, will discuss the legal aspects of environmental issues.

A second panel discussion, which will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 6, in Nucor Auditorium, will focus on environmental issues as they affect Arkansas.

Mr. Rule will lead the discussion and will be joined by another Lyon trustee, Ronald C. Spillers, retired president of Arkansas Eastman Division of Eastman Chemicals Co.; Kellee Simpson, senior environmental analyst with Entergy’s Independence Steam Electric Station at Newark; and Jim Ross, manager of environmental affairs with Eastman Chemical Co.’s Arkansas operations.

Topics of this discussion will include the history of environmental consciousness in Arkansas and how Arkansans have responded to environmental issues.

Panelists for the Monday night symposium will bring a wide range of expertise to the discussion.

In her research in atmospheric chemistry, Dr. Lloyd develops new instruments for detecting atmospheric pollutants and collaborates with an interdisciplinary team that measures pollution all over the country. Their goal is to understand the chemistry and meteorology leading to pollution episodes such as acid rain, aerosol haze and photochemical smog.

Dr. Roumasset has been on the faculty at the University of Hawaii at Manoa since 1976, teaching environmental and resource economics, economic development and public microeconomics. He previously taught at the University of California at Davis and at the University of the Philippines.

Mr. Rule has been a member of the Rose Law Firm since 1964, following graduation with high honors from the University of Arkansas Law School at Fayetteville. He specializes in environmental law, commercial trial practice and bankruptcy. He is a member of the Arkansas and American Bar Associations.

A reception in the Lyon Building rotunda will follow the Monday night program.

Lyon to add soccer as a varsity sport next fall

Lyon College will be fielding a varsity soccer team next fall.

The college’s Board of Trustees approved the creation of men’s and women’s varsity soccer programs, beginning with a men’s team in fall 2002 and a women’s team in fall 2003.

The soccer programs were approved by the trustees at their annual fall meeting Friday (Oct. 26) on the Lyon campus.

In anticipation of the programs’ approval, the college has been expanding Huser Field so it will meet NCAA and NAIA regulations. Athletic Director Terry Garner said work on the field is close to completion.

Three lanes of the track that surrounds the field have been removed to allow room for the regulation-size soccer field. The remaining five lanes of the track will be resurfaced and marked to facilitate walking and jogging.

The new field will be 115 yards by 70 yards. An irrigation system will also be added to allow the field to be watered. A scoreboard, equipment and bleachers will be ready by next fall. Improvements will also be made to the nearby intramural field so that it can be used as a practice field for soccer.

Recent renovations in Becknell Gymnasium included the refurbishing of locker rooms that will be used by the soccer teams.

He said the soccer teams will play a full schedule of approximately 16 matches and compete in the TranSouth Conference in the fall.

“This will add a fall spectator sport to the men’s athletic program,” Garner said. “Women’s volleyball is the only fall spectator sport we have now.”

Garner said the TranSouth is a strong soccer conference. He noted that Lyon also will be playing nonconference games against teams from other Arkansas schools.

Lyon will begin advertising for a men’s soccer coach soon and Garner said he hopes to have one on board by Jan. 1. He also hopes to have a women’s coach hired by next fall.

Garner said scholarships and other financial aid will be available for student athletes who are recruited for the soccer teams.

He said the college hopes to recruit about 20 student-athletes for each soccer team.

Creation of a soccer program has been under consideration since at least 1996. The possibility of creating varsity soccer was discussed as part of the strategic planning process in 1999-2000.

College officials believe the soccer programs will contribute to the visibility of the college locally and regionally, provide a fall spectator sport for the campus and community, and assist in the recruitment of additional students and foster additional enrollment growth.

Balistrieri to speak on diversity

Lyon College is bringing to campus Tom Balistrieri, Ed.D., the director of student development and counseling at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts who intends to present a very moving, difficult and different look at diversity.

In Dr. Balistrieri’s opinion, the violence we are experiencing all around us is partly due to a lack of an expansive and deep appreciation for diversity.

Dr. Balistrieri will speak at 7 p.m. Thursday, November 8, in Nucor Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public.

Dr. Balistrieri will also lead a drumming ceremony on the Spragins quad at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Everyone is welcome at this special event.

LATEC orientation

All students interested in teaching as a career are invited to a LATEC orientation on Monday, November 12 at noon. Bring your lunch to EDH3 in Edwards Commons and learn about the teacher education concentration at Lyon.

'Third Man' coming to the Melba this weekend

A “director’s cut” of “The Third Man,” one of the best British films of all time, will be shown at the Melba Theatre in downtown Batesville this weekend.

Admission for adults will be $2, and $1 for students, children and seniors.

The film, which has an additional 11 minutes never before seen in the U.S., will be shown at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2-3, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4.

The special showing is presented by the Ozark Foothills FilmFest.

Sports

Tennis

The Pipers tennis team defeated Southern Arkansas University 6-3 Tuesday at Magnolia.

The Pipers started out strong by sweeping the doubles matches. Paulette Pearson and Laura Higginbottom set the tone by defeating their opponent 8-4 at the No. 1 doubles position. Paulette also played well in her singles match, defeating Jessica Burnett 7-6 (3), 6-2.

Reagan Greeno was another double winner. She teamed with Megan Osborne to win a close doubles match and clinched the team victory when she won her singles match in straight sets.
