Dr. Robbins selected Arkansas Professor of the Year
Dr.
Helen Robbins, associate professor of English at Lyon College, has become the
ninth Lyon faculty member in 13 years to be named Arkansas Professor of the
Year.
The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) announced Dr. Robbins’ selection as the 2001 winner of the award Tuesday, November 13.
In addition to winning nine awards in 13 years, Lyon faculty members have won the honor for the past five consecutive years. No other Arkansas college or university has won more than two. Only one other institution in the nation -- West Virginia University -- has won more of these awards than Lyon.
Dr. Robbins was selected from 384 faculty members nominated by colleges and universities throughout the country.
“This is a wonderful and richly deserved recognition for Dr. Robbins,” said Dr. Walter B. Roettger, president of Lyon College. “She does so many important things so very well. Helen leads by example and I am delighted that CASE and the Carnegie Foundation have found her example to be both inspiring and compelling.”
Past professors of the year from Lyon, and their teaching fields, include Dr. Robert Gregerson, biology, in 2000; Dr. David Stricklin, history, in 1999; Dr. James Rulla, mathematics, in 1998; Dr. Bart Lewis, Spanish, 1997; Dr. Scott Peterson, biology, in 1994; Dr. Terrell Tebbetts, English, in 1992; Dr. George Lankford, social sciences, 1991; and Dr. Roberta Bustin, chemistry, 1989.
“I am very happy and honored to receive the CASE Professor of the Year award and especially to be numbered among the other eight Lyon College professors who have received this award since I came to Lyon twelve years ago,” Dr. Robbins said. “And I am humbled to know that I can easily name five or six colleagues teaching at Lyon College right now who are more deserving of this award than I am. It is a privilege to work among people who care so much about their students, who put student achievement above their own personal recognition.”
Since joining the Lyon English faculty in 1989, Dr. Robbins has taught a variety of courses, ranging from Freshman Composition to senior-level British Literature to film studies.
She is also active outside the classroom. She is director of the Nichols International Studies Program and director of the Writing Center. She is president of the Faculty Assembly and co-chairs the college’s Self-Study Steering Committee that is preparing for reaccreditation review by the North Central Association of Colleges and Universities. She also has served on numerous other committees and has chaired the Promotion and Tenure Committee, the Curriculum Committee, and the Governance and Nominating Committee.
Dr. Robbins received her A.B. degree at Smith College in Northampton, Mass., and her M.A. and Ph.D. from Duke University in Durham, N.C., in 1988.
She has been published in several publications, including “Postscript: Publication of the Philological Association of the Carolinas” in which her 1990 essay, “Sexual and Textual Authority in Two Novels by Charlotte Bronte,” won the Joiner Prize for best essay of the year.
Nominees are evaluated in four areas: impact on and involvement with undergraduate students; scholarly approach to teaching; service to undergraduate students, institution, community and profession; and support from colleagues and students.
