Two Lyon students receive Rotary Ambassador scholarships

DeJuan Ruffin

Jonathan Thompson

Two Lyon College students have been awarded Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships for the 2002-2003 academic year, according to Batesville Rotary Club President Frank Winfrey.

Receiving the scholarships are DeJuan Ruffin of Pocahontas, a 2001 Lyon graduate, and Jonathan Thompson of Ozark, who will graduate at Lyon next May.

The Rotary District 6150 Ambassadorial Scholarship Committee met in Little Rock on September 22 to interview a number of highly qualified candidates and select recipients. The Rotary International Foundation allocated Rotary District 6150 (Northeast Arkansas, including Little Rock) two one-year Ambassadorial Academic Scholarships to award based on 2000-2001 contributions to the Foundation from the District 6150 Rotary Clubs.

Each of the scholarships provides funding up to $25,000 for one academic year of study in another country. The awards are intended to help cover round-trip transportation, tuition, fees, room and board expenses, and some educational supplies.

Ruffin will spend a year either in Mexico (Universidad de Guadalajara or Universidad Iberoamericana), Costa Rica (Universidad de Costa Rica), or Puerto Rico (University of Puerto Rico). Ruffin will study Spanish and pursue graduate studies in counseling when he returns to the United States.

Thompson will spend a year either in Spain (Universidad de Cantabria or the Universidad de Oviedo) or in Venezuela (Universidad de los Andes or Universidad Central de Venezuela). Thompson will study business and Iberian/Latin culture in Spanish. He plans to pursue an M.B.A. with an emphasis on International Business after he returns to the United States.

Tim Ernst, nature photographer, to present slide show

Nature photographer Tim Ernst will present a slide show of his work at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 9, in Nucor Auditorium in the Lyon Building at Lyon College.

Admission is free and the public is invited to the event, which is sponsored by the college’s Convocations Committee.

Ernst is Arkansas’ best known wilderness photographer. He has been hiking, driving and crawling around the Ozark Mountains for most of his life, preserving the images he sees on film for everyone to enjoy.

His photographs have appeared in hundreds of national, regional and local publications. Some of his credits include National Geographic, Audubon, Backpacker, Outside, Outdoor Photographer, American Hiker, Natural History, The Arkansas Times, Readers Digest, and The New York Times.

Ernst has also been a long-time outdoorsman and hiker. He founded and is the president of the Ozark Highlands Trail Association. His backpacking articles have appeared in numerous national publications, and he is the author of a dozen hiking trail guidebooks.

He is the author of four art photography books. His first coffee-table picture book, “Arkansas Portfolio: Twenty Years of Wilderness Photography,” won rave reviews all over the region. His second art photography book, “Wilderness Reflections: An Intimate Look at Wild Places in America,” was published in 1995. His third photo book, “Buffalo River Wilderness,” combines his color images with watercolors by renowned painter William McNamera. All of the images are from the Buffalo River area in northwest Arkansas, where Ernst lives.

His most recent book of photos is “Arkansas Spring: Dogwoods, Waterfalls and Wildflowers.”

He has received many awards for his volunteer service, including the “Volunteer Of The Year” for the nation from the American Hiking Society.

Although Ernst sells his photography work through magazine articles, books, calendars, postcards and limited edition prints, his favorite form of expression is through his special slide programs. These are really works from the heart. These are not “how-to” programs, but rather meant to entertain and inspire.
