Environmental symposium planned

The Lyon College Convocations Committee has scheduled two convocations as part of a symposium on environmental issues in November.

The first panel discussion, “The Environment, Economics and the Law,” will be at 7 p.m. Monday, November 5, in Nucor Auditorium in the Lyon Building.

Panelists will be Dr. Judith Lloyd, professor of environmental chemistry at the State University of New York at Old Westbury; Dr. James Roumasset, an environmental economist from the University of Hawaii; and Herbert C. Rule III, an attorney with the Rose Law Firm in Little Rock.

Dr. Lloyd will talk about air pollution and the government’s air monitoring procedures. Dr. Roumasset will discuss the cost of pollution-control strategies and the Bush Administration’s environmental policies. Mr. Rule, who is also a member of the Lyon Board of Trustees, will discuss the legal aspects of the issue.

A second panel discussion, which will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 6, in Nucor Auditorium, will focus on environmental issues as they affect Arkansas. Mr. Rule will lead the discussion and will be joined by another Lyon trustee, Ronald C. Spillers, retired president of Arkansas Eastman Division of Eastman Chemicals Co.; Kellee Simpson of Entergy’s Independence Plant at Newark, and Jim Ross of Arkansas Eastman.

Topics of this discussion will include the history of environmental consciousness in Arkansas and how Arkansans have responded to environmental issues. The programs are open to the public and admission is free.
