Environmental symposium planned
The Lyon College Convocations Committee has scheduled two convocations as part of a symposium on environmental issues in November.The first panel discussion, “The Environment, Economics and the Law,” will be at 7 p.m. Monday, November 5, in Nucor Auditorium in the Lyon Building.
Panelists will be Dr. Judith Lloyd, professor of environmental chemistry at the State University of New York at Old Westbury; Dr. James Roumasset, an environmental economist from the University of Hawaii; and Herbert C. Rule III, an attorney with the Rose Law Firm in Little Rock.
Dr. Lloyd will talk about air pollution and the government’s air monitoring procedures. Dr. Roumasset will discuss the cost of pollution-control strategies and the Bush Administration’s environmental policies. Mr. Rule, who is also a member of the Lyon Board of Trustees, will discuss the legal aspects of the issue.
A second panel discussion, which will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 6, in Nucor Auditorium, will focus on environmental issues as they affect Arkansas. Mr. Rule will lead the discussion and will be joined by another Lyon trustee, Ronald C. Spillers, retired president of Arkansas Eastman Division of Eastman Chemicals Co.; Kellee Simpson of Entergy’s Independence Plant at Newark, and Jim Ross of Arkansas Eastman.
Topics of this discussion will include the history of environmental consciousness in Arkansas and how Arkansans have responded to environmental issues. The programs are open to the public and admission is free.

Jim Peterson speaks during the Writer’s Lifetime Talk and Luncheon in Flanders Reading Room Tuesday. The luncheon is part of the Visiting Writers Series. Peterson, a poet and playwright, spoke on several subjects, including the influence of animals in his life and his writing. Peterson also held a public reading of his work Tuesday night in Bevens Music Room.

Tennis The Lyon College women’s tennis team defeated University of the Ozarks 7-2 in matches Monday in Clarksville. The Lyon men’s team was edged by Ozarks 5-4 but took two of the three doubles matches.Will Reed and Juan Herrera won what Coach Be Pham called “an unbelievable doubles match,” 12-10, and Cory McDaniel and Jonathan Thompson won their match 8-6.
Herrera and Daniel Moses won their singles matches for Lyon.
For the Pipers, Paulette Pearson, Nicolette Preiser, Reagan Greeno, Susie Scanlan and Anne Carter won their singles matches. In doubles, Laura Higginbottom (playing with a wrist injury) and Pearson won their match 8-2, and Greeno and Carter won theirs 8-5.
The teams will host Hendrix at 3 p.m. Wednesday in a rescheduled matchup.
