January 26, 2001

A reception was held Thursday, January 18, for Lucy Yeager, who retired January 1 after nine years as director of alumni relations for the College. Mrs. Yeager, a 1967 graduate of Lyon, was recognized for her outstanding work in building relationships between the College and its alumni. Her colleagues in the Office of Institutional Advancement presented her with a Lyon College watch as a token of their appreciation. A search is under way for a new director of alumni relations.

The Pipers defeated Berry College 72-54 Saturday at Becknell Gym to improve their conference record to 3-1. The Lyon women’s basketball team has won three of its last four games and two in a row for the first time this season.

The Pipers are now in third place in the TranSouth Conference behind Union and Freed-Hardeman. They were to play Blue Mountain College Thursday night in Mississippi. They return home Saturday to host Freed-Hardeman (4-0) at 2 p.m. in Becknell.

The Pipers are 6-12 overall this season, but they have begun playing with greater confidence, according to Coach Grace McDowell.

“We’re gaining confidence, I think, with every game that we play,” she told The Batesville Guard after the Berry College win. “Pre-season is over and done with. We don’t care about that anymore. We’re 3-1 as far as we’re concerned, and we’re just taking it one game at a time in conference. We know every game is going to be a contest, especially when we go on the road.”

The Pipers led only 30-27 a the half Saturday, but came back strong in the second half, outscoring the Lady Vikings 42-27. The Pipers hit five of nine three-point shots in the second half, and had only eight turnovers for the game. They out rebounded Berry 50-37.

Melissa Allen led the Pipers with 27 points. She is averaging 18.3 points per game and has scored 22 or more in three games. Allen also had eight rebounds and five steals. Sarah Meier scored 23 points, grabbed an impressive 15 rebounds, and had three blocked shots.

Gretchen Hall scored 11 points and nabbed six rebounds. Sarah Adcock and Katie Vinson each had five rebounds.

The Lyon College Scots broke their winless streak in the TransSouth Conference Saturday, downing the Berry College Vikings 75-71. The men’s basketball team is 1-3 in the conference and 4-13 overall.

The Scots held a 14-point lead with less than eight minutes remaining, but the lead dwindled to three points. But Thomas Rost hit a free throw, giving the Scots a four-point lead with 10 seconds to go, and they were able to hold on for the win.

Rost scored 15 points to lead the team. Billy Linson Jr. had 12 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals. Vernon Johnson and Casey Scribner came off the bench to combine for 21 points.

The Scots were to host Philander Smith college at Becknell Thursday night. Lyon will host Freed-Hardeman (2-2, 16-6) at 4 p.m. Saturday in Becknell.
