Civil War drama presented by Batesville Community Theater
Batesville Community Theater will present a dramatization of Stephen Vincent Benet’s poetic masterpiece, “John Brown’s Body,” on February 21, 22, and 23 at 7:30 p.m. in Independence Hall, University of Arkansas Community College, Batesville.
Lyon College students, faculty and staff will be admitted free with ID. General admission is $5.
The Pulitzer Prize work, directed by Gordon L. Boyer ’54, spans the Civil War, surging with historic crises, and relating intimate tales of combatants’ ruptured lives.
Starting with fanatical John Brown’s abortive revolt to abolish slavery, the production, through a number of characters, presents a dramatic picture of the tragic conflict that will always burden the soul of America. John Saltzman, Lindley Weygandt, and John Dahlquist, retired dean and vice president of academic affairs at Lyon College, are the actors in the production. Singing ballads and spirituals, a 30-voice a cappella chorus, directed by Gayle Stobaugh ’62, is an integral part of the performance.
