Bishop appointed new soccer coach at Lyon College

Jeremy S. Bishop is the new head coach of the Lyon College men’s soccer team, which will begin varsity play next fall. Terry Garner, Lyon’s director of athletics, announced Bishop’s appointment this week.

Lyon will be fielding its first varsity soccer team next fall. A women’s team will be added in fall 2003.

Bishop has been serving the past year as head women’s soccer coach and assistant men’s soccer coach at Barton County Community College in Great Bend, Kansas. Before that, he was assistant coach for the men’s and women’s soccer teams at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. During this time he also served as head soccer coach at Central Arkansas Christian High School in Little Rock.

He also was a graduate assistant in soccer and in the Department of Kinesiology at UCA, where he received his master’s degree in kinesiology in 2000. He received his bachelor’s degree at Harding University in 1997. At Harding, he played varsity football and was on the club soccer team.

He also was active off the playing fields at Harding, making the Dean’s List and serving as vice president and president of Kappa Sigma Kappa. He spent a semester studying abroad in Florence, Italy.

The challenge of building a new soccer program appeals to Bishop. “I’m excited about the opportunity to help start this program,” Bishop said. As the coach of a new program, he can build from the ground up, he said, from recruiting his own players to equipping the team and helping prepare the field. “This is the perfect time to add a soccer program at Lyon,” Bishop said, because of the growing popularity of soccer in Arkansas and across the country.

Bishop’s first order of business: recruiting. He is hoping for a squad of from 18 to 22 players next fall. Initially, he will focus on recruiting students from Arkansas high schools with strong soccer programs, including Little Rock, Jonesboro and Fayetteville, as well as those in north Arkansas.

The high school soccer season is just starting, so Bishop will be visiting these schools’ games as well as club soccer tournaments in the region.

Scholarships and other financial aid will be available for student athletes who are recruited for the soccer teams.

There are eight other soccer teams in the TranSouth Conference and Bishop hopes to schedule eight nonconference games for a total of 16 next fall. The college soccer season begins in late August and concludes with the conference tournament in Nov-ember.

Bishop also will serve as an assistant coach to the women’s soccer team when it takes the field in the fall of 2003. Garner said he hopes to have a head coach for the women’s team hired by next fall.

Lyon, Arthritis Foundation provide pool steps

Lyon College and the Arthritis Foundation’s Arkansas Chapter have teamed up to assist the foundation’s aquatic program in Batesville. The Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program (AFAP) uses the Lyon College pool in Becknell Gymnasium. The College recently installed new pool steps purchased by the Arthritis Foundation to make it easier for swimmers to get in and out of the pool. The AFAP is a water exercise program designed for people with arthritis and related conditions. The Batesville group meets three times a week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) at 8 a.m. in the Lyon pool. The monthly fee for the water aerobics program is $15. Shown with the new pool steps, called an “Easy Ladder,” are (from left) Bob Qualls, Lyon’s director of public relations and also a member of the Arthritis Foundation Arkansas Chapter’s board of directors; Terry Garner, Lyon’s director of athletics; Karen Schneider, vice president of programs for the Arkansas Chapter; and Juanita Felts, the aquatic program instructor in Batesville. For more information about the program, contact Felts at (870) 793-2168 or the Arthritis Foundation’s Arkansas Chapter at (800) 482-8858.

Dr. Frank Winfrey paper accepted for presentation

Dr. Frank L. Winfrey, the Clark N. and Mary Perkins Barton Professor of Management, has been selected to present his paper at the Graduate School of Industrial Administration at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh this June.

The paper, “The Corporate Form and Corporate Responsibility in the Inter-national Context,” suggests that the concept of international corporate social responsibility is a function of competing values and objectives at the individual, corporate, and institutional level. The paper questions the long-term efficacy of the free-market autocracy of the multinational/global corporate form in the context of either western style liberal democracy or other more communal/tribal forms of society. The paper, one of approximately 25 accepted for presentation from worldwide submissions, will be presented at the International Corporate Responsibility conference sponsored by the Carnegie Bosch Institute for Applied Studies in International Management.

The Institute was established in 1990 to promote research projects related to understanding international management problems of significance to organizations as well as society. The Institute is funded through a major endowment provided by the U.S. subsidiary of the Robert Bosch Group, one of Germany’s largest international corporations.

Note: The Noontime Student Recital scheduled for February 27 has been canceled.
