Lyon welcomes new biology professor, Lindblom

Dr. Tim H. Lindblom has joined the Lyon College faculty as an assistant professor of biology. Lindblom assumed his teaching responsibilities at the beginning of the January term.

Lindblom has been conducting postdoctoral research at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, where he was a Guyer Postdoctoral Fellow in 2000-2001.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in molecular biology from Auburn University and a Ph.D. in cellular biology from the University of Georgia, where he was a teaching assistant, guest lecturer and graduate researcher. He received an Excellence in Teaching Award at Georgia in 1998.

He was cellular biology graduate student president in 1995-96 and technical and layout editor of the university’s biology laboratory manuals for four editions. He is a member of the Society for Developmental Biology and the Blue Key National Honor Society.

Lindblom’s research focuses on how cells change shape and move during embryogenesis, when the embryonic cells convert into the three-dimensional structure of the juvenile organism. He studies this process, called morphogenesis, in a common nematode called Caenorhabditis elegans. This research provides insight into similar cell migrations in humans, such as those during human embryogenesis, wound healing and metastasis of cancer cells.

He has co-authored articles based on this research in professional journals, including Current Biology, Gene and Developmental Biology.

Lindblom and his wife, Susan, have a six-year-old son, Ethan. Lindblom’s hobbies include woodworking and outdoor sports such as cycling, backbacking and canoeing.

Guild Trio to perform West Concert

The West Endowed Concert Series at Lyon College will feature the Guild Trio in performance at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 12, in the Bevens Music Room. The public is invited and admission will be free.

Hailed by The Washington Post for their “golden touch,” violinist Janet Orenstein, cellist Brooks Whitehouse and pianist Tina Dahl will perform trios by Robert Schumann, Maurice Ravel and Mrs. H. H. A. Beach.

Since its formation in 1988, the Guild Trio has become one of the premier ensembles of its generation and has performed across the country and around the world. Currently the trio-in-residence at the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, the trio members perform regularly and serve as faculty for the McIntyre Department of Music.

The Guild Trio is a frequent feature on National Public Radio’s “Performance Today” and has performed on several public television programs.

The Dan C. and Sidney Childs West Endowment was established by Dr. and Mrs. West in May 1981 for the purpose of offering live musical performances or stringed instrument instruction at Lyon College. The West Concert Endowment has supported free concerts on campus by fine musicians such as Trio Cassatt and The Quapaw Quartet. Dr. West was president of Lyon College from 1972 to 1988.

Professor of the Year, call for nominations

Institutional Advancement is now accepting nominations of deserving faculty for the 2002 Professor of the Year Award. Lyon College may nominate up to three outstanding faculty members for the award, presented annually by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and directed by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

To nominate a faculty member to the candidate pool, contact Gina Garrett at 870-698-4624 or email ggarrett@lyon.edu. Deadline for nominations is Thursday, February 7.

Each nomination should include a brief statement describing why the faculty member should receive the Professor of the Year Award. An administrative committee will select final nominees from the candidate pool, and original nominators will be contacted for additional information at a later date.

For information on eligibility requirements, check out the announcements in the conferences folder on First-Class.

Mathis presents Patterson Lecture

Nationally syndicated columnist Deborah Mathis visits with members of the audience after giving the Hugh B. Patterson, Sr. Lecture on Thursday, January 24. The Patterson Lecture, which brings a prominent journalist to speak on campus each year, was one of a number of events scheduled during Diversity Week at the College. While praising the idea of having a Diversity Week, Mathis challenged the College to follow through on the idea by hiring a more diverse faculty and staff. Mathis spoke about the changing face of racism in the nation with Hispanics and Asians becoming more of a focus of some, such as conservative Pat Buchanan who she had debated the day before. Mathis emphasized that society will not be able to correct the problem until we learn to accept the whole group and not just individuals from within the group. Mathis tied her comments into journalism by speaking about how corporate America has taken over American media, meaning that people don’t and won’t see the whole story, if it is even reported, on issues that impact their lives. The media now focuses on being a “product” instead of a service as it once was, she said.

American Chemical Society meeting

The central Arkansas local section of the American Chemical Society will hold its February meeting on Friday, February 8, at 7 p.m. in Nucor Auditorium. The guest speaker will be Dr. David F. Wiemer of the University of Iowa, who will present a seminar entitled “A Search for Natural Insecticides.”

The talk will discuss how leafcutter ants avoid certain species of plants, which leads to a search within these plants for the presence of natural chemical defenses against this insect.

This meeting is open to the public, and everyone is invited to attend.

Sports

Scots basketball

The Lyon College Scots knocked off the No. 6 team in the NAIA Saturday when they upset Freed-Hardeman 78-72 in Henderson, Tennessee.

The Scots led 34-28 at the half and were ahead by 20 with 10 minutes to play, but Freed-Hardeman made a surge and pulled within two in the closing minutes. Jon-David Parker hit a three to give the Scots a 5-point lead with 1:45 left. The Scots were able to hit their free throws to ice the win.

Lyon outrebounded Freed-Hardeman 44-36, including 19 offensive boards.

Brandon Byrd scored 27 points and Chris Wilkinson and Parker added 13 each.

Senior guard Terry Large suffered an ankle injury in the game, but the severity of the injury was undetermined earlier this week.

Lyon is 9-9 for the season and 3-2 in conference play. They were to take on first place Union (4-1) Thursday night at home, then travel to Cleveland, Tennessee, to play Lee University Saturday afternoon.

Pipers basketball

The Pipers suffered a conference loss to Freed-Hardeman 65-56 Saturday in Henderson, Tennessee. The Pipers shot 28 percent in falling to the NAIA’s No. 13 team.

Andi Craft led the Pipers with 12 points while freshman Kelly Gickowski and Mika Seay added 11 and 10, respectively. Gickowski was nine of 10 from the free-throw line. Candace Pettis had 11 rebounds for the Pipers.

The Pipers, 9-10 overall and 2-4 in the TranSouth Conference, were to play Union University Thursday night in Becknell Gymnasium. They travel to Lee University in Tennessee for a Saturday afternoon conference match-up.
