Budy wins poetry award

A poem by Andrea Hollander Budy, writer-in-residence at Lyon College, has won the 2002 Ellipsis Poetry Award.

Her poem, “The Life of Inanimate Objects,” won the award, which is sponsored annually by Ellipsis: Art and Literature, the literary journal of Westminster College of Salt Lake City, Utah.

The winning poem is chosen in a “blind” competition in which the judges do not know the author’s name. Well-known poets are asked to choose the winner. This year’s judge was Philip Levine. Previous judges have been Sandra Cisneros and Stanley Plumly.

Ellipsis has been published by Westminster College since 1967. It is edited by undergraduates and publishes the work of nationally known writers.

Budy has taught at Lyon since 1991. In 1998 she was awarded the Lamar Williamson Prize for Teaching Excellence.

Her most recent book of poetry, “The Other Life,” was published in 2000.

Lyon to host TRIO rally Feb. 23

Students and graduates from TRIO Programs across Arkansas will participate in a special rally on Saturday, February 23, at Lyon College to show their appreciation and support for our nation’s TRIO Programs. More than 400 students from around the state are expected on campus.

The day’s events will include guest speakers, recognition of outstanding TRIO participants as Hall of Fame inductees, campus tours, and a college fair.

Lyon College houses two TRIO Programs. The APPLE Project Upward Bound Program serves 80 students from 13 area schools during the academic year and 50 students during the summer. Lyon’s Upward Bound Math/Science Program serves 50 students each summer.

“We are very pleased to be hosting this year’s state celebration of National TRIO Day,” said Kim Boehm, director of the APPLE Project. “APPLE Project and its sister programs across the nation provide necessary educational support to hundreds of thousands of deserving students.”

The Guild Trio’s performance was made possible by the Dan C. and Sidney Childs West Endowment, which Dr. and Mrs. West established in 1981. Dr. West served as president of Lyon College from 1972 to 1988.

'96 alumnus Donald Duncan appointed director of music at San Antonio church

Donald W. Duncan, a 1996 graduate of Lyon College, has been appointed director of music ministries at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in San Antonio, Texas, according to the January issue of The American Organist.

Duncan, a music major at Lyon, has been serving as director of music at St. James the Apostle Episcopal Church and School in Conroe, Texas.

In addition to playing the parish’s 71-rank VisserRowland organ, Duncan will conduct the semiprofessional parish choir, the boys and girls’ choirs, and oversee the parish concert series. He will also be responsible for expanding the church’s music ministries by organizing a handbell choir and instrumental ensembles.

Dr. Grover Evans speaks during the Black Students Association’s annual banquet honoring Black History Month on Saturday. Evans, a motivational speaker from Little Rock, shared his life experiences, which included becoming a quadriplegic as the result of an automobile accident many years ago. BSA members also honored Dr. Jane Fagg, one of BSA’s sponsors and who is retiring at the end of the school year, for her work with the student group.
