Lyon Board of Trustees holds fall meeting on campus

The Lyon College Board of Trustees elected two former board members to trustee emeritus status at its annual fall meeting Oct. 25 at the college.

Paul L. Bone of Clinton and Graham Holloway of Georgetown, Texas, were elected trustees emeriti. Bone, the former owner of Thriftway Foods in Clinton, retired from the board when his term ended in June. Holloway, retired chairman of the board of American Funds Distributors, Inc. of Dallas, Texas, left the board in 2001 and continues to serve as an advisory trustee.

Emeritus status is reserved for trustees who have concluded their final period of service as a trustee and whose service to the board has been especially outstanding. Trustees emeriti have advisory status to the board.

The Lyon Board passed resolutions honoring two friends of the college who died recently – J. William Sanders of Pine Bluff and J. Gaston Williamson of Little Rock. Sanders was a member of the Board of Trustees from 1992 until his death in August. Williamson served the college through his work at the Rose Law Firm in Little Rock, his support of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and personal advocacy on the college’s behalf. He established the Lamar Williamson Prize for Faculty Excellence, which is named in honor of his father.

The board granted sabbatical leaves to three faculty members: Dr. Martha Beck, associate professor of philosophy; Dr. Barrie Bondurant, associate professor of psychology; and Dr. Catherine Bordeau, associate professor of French.

Dr. Beck proposes to use her sabbatical in spring 2004 to complete a book on Plato, Aristotle and Greek tragedy. Dr. Bondurant plans to use her sabbatical in fall 2003 to undertake a major review of the research in her areas of interest and develop the next phase of her research agenda. Dr. Bordeau will use her sabbatical in spring 2004 to finish one of the final chapters of a book she has been working on.

In other action, the board created an Enrollment Services Committee and realigned the membership of its other standing committees in order to accommodate service on the new committee.

The committee will spearhead the board’s efforts to assist the college in such areas as student recruitment and retention.

Members of the new committee are James L. “Skip” Rutherford III (chair) of Little Rock, W. Lee Kinney (vice chair) of Pine Bluff, Paul K. Holmes III of Fort Smith and Dianne H. Lamberth of Batesville.
