Evans to speak at BSA banquet
Black History Month will be celebrated at Lyon College with a banquet Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. in Edwards Dining Hall.
The theme of the celebration will be “Keeping the Path Lit So Others May Follow.” The Black Students Association is the event’s sponsor. Guest speaker will be Dr. Grover Evans, a motivational speaker, educator and business consultant.
The cost of the banquet is $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. The public is invited. Reservations may be made by calling the college’s Student Life office at 698-4314.
A lifelong resident of Arkansas, Dr. Evans holds a bachelor’s degree in music and health education from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. He received his doctorate in nutrition counseling from LaSalle University, graduating cum laude.
Dr. Evans, a quadriplegic as a result of an automobile accident many years ago, frequently speaks to groups on goal setting, self-esteem, diversity, health education, nutrition and drug abuse.
Though he has been confined to a wheelchair since the accident, Dr. Evans has accomplished many athletic goals and career achievements. These include being named Swimmer of the Year by the U.S. Wheelchair Association; being the first African-American to swim in the 1992 Paralympics in Barcelona, Spain; and holding Paralympic records in swimming, including five world records, 46 American records and 25 national championships.
Dr. Evans is the first African-American to be in-ducted into the Arkansas Swimming Hall of Fame, the first to be displayed in the International Swimming Hall of Fame, and is a member of the Arkansas Black Hall of Fame.

The choir is holding the benefit concerts to raise funds for the choir’s trip to Washington, D.C., where it will perform at the National Cathedral on March 17. An offering will be taken at each of the benefit concerts to help offset travel expenses.
Choir members from northwest Arkansas include Russ Swearingen and Shannon Schoeller, both juniors from Rogers; and Elizabeth Gabbard, a junior from Fort Smith.
The Lyon College Concert Choir is directed by Dr. Michael H. Arshagouni.
At the concerts, the choir will perform various works, including excerpts from Vivaldi’s “Gloria;” German Romantic sacred songs; sacred motets by Bruckner, Parry and Arshagouni; and traditional American spirituals.

Batesville Area Arts Council soup fundraising project
The Batesville Area Arts Council will have a vital fund-raising project on Saturday, February 2, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Homemade soups will be sold by the quart at curbside on Main Street in front of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. There will be all sorts of soups, most of them “hearty,” such as cheesy potato, beef and barley, corn chowder, chili, etc. Quarts sell for $5 each. Tickets are available at the Art Gallery on Main Street next to Heuer’s Shoe Store - across the street from Elizabeth’s Restaurant. You may also contact Diana Dahlquist at Schwegman’s at 793-6043 or email ddahlquist@cox-internet.com, who will gladly deliver them to a convenient spot.
Tickets or payment by exact cash or check is preferred. (The Girl Scouts delivering the soup aren’t prepared to make change, and tickets would be much easier for them.)
People could enjoy the soups the next day while they watch the Super (souper?) Bowl.
