Judd Deere, '10, writes, "I have accepted a 'new position' in Senator Mike Crapo's office and will now be serving as his Press Secretary & Digital Director. Our previous Press Secretary recently departed to become the Senator's Communications Director on the Banking Committee where he is now the Ranking Member. My new position will continue to allow me to oversee and implement his social media strategy, while also serving as his spokesman and primary media contact, as well as many other things."

Lyon named to community service honor roll

Lyon College has been named to the 2013 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement. The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), which administers the annual Honor Roll award, recognized 690 colleges and universities for their impact on issues from poverty and homelessness to environmental justice. Lyon accepting award nominations

Lyon College is accepting nominations for the Patterson Decade Award, Distinguished Alumnus(a), Decade of Service Award, Lifetime of Service Award, and the Honorary Alumna/Alumnus Award. Nomination forms are available here on Lyon's website.

New events this year at Arkansas Scottish Festival

The 34th Arkansas Scottish Festival is set for April 13-14 on the Lyon College campus in Batesville. Admission to the festival is free. New this year will be a dog show with prizes in several categories, and performances by dancers from the West Magnet Elementary School for Visual and Performing Arts. Also new this year will be a Community Quintathlon, in which teams from area businesses and organizations will compete in five fun events while vying for a unique trophy. Three-person teams will compete in a scavenger hunt, Frisbee toss, Highland fling, Brave costume contest, and race. READ MORE

 

Brehm to speak as part of Visiting Writers Series

Author John Brehm will speak at Lyon College as part of the Visiting Writers Series. Brehm will host a public interview at 11 a.m. March 19 in the Alphin Board Room on the Lyon College campus. He also will have a public reading at 7:30 p.m. March 19 in Bevens Music Room. Brehm is the author of two poetry collections - Sea of Faith, which won the 2004 Brittingham Prize, and Help Is on the Way, winner of the 2012 Four Lakes Prize, both from the University of Wisconsin Press. A combined 100 years of Greek life at Lyon College will be celebrated on campus in April as two sororities and one fraternity plan anniversary events. READ MORE


Bordeau to deliver Williamson Prize Lecture

Lyon College Associate Professor of French Dr. Cathy Bordeau will deliver the 2012-13 Williamson Prize Lecture at 11 a.m. March 26 in Maxfield Auditorium on the Lyon College campus. Bordeau's lecture is titled "The Power of Place." READ MORE


Hammond to present archaeology convocation

Norman Hammond, Professor Emeritus of Archaeology and former chairman of the Department of Archaeology at Boston University, will present a convocation about archaeology at 7:30 p.m. March 27 in Nucor Auditorium on the Lyon College campus. Hammond earned his M.A. in archaeology and anthropology, his diploma in classical archaeology, and his Ph.D. and Sc.D. in Maya archaeology at the University of Cambridge, England. He began working in Maya archaeology on a Harvard University project in Guatemala, and has worked on Maya sites in Belize since 1970; he has also worked in Ecuador. He is the author of Ancient Maya Civilization. Dr. Hammond also directed archaeological projects in Libya, Tunisia, and Afghanistan (and co-edited The Archaeology of Afghanistan [1978]) before taking up Maya archaeology.

Scots eliminated from national tourney

Two second-half scoring droughts of a combined 10:50 and a 11 turnovers in the final 20 minutes proved to be the difference between winning and losing for the 19th-ranked Lyon College women's basketball team as the 16th-ranked Georgetown College (Ky.) Tigers eliminated the Scots from the NAIA Division I Women's National Championship tournament Thursday night with a 66-55 win in the Frankfort Convention Center. READ MORE

Lyon pitchers shut down Hannibal-LaGrange

Lyon College junior hurlers Ben Neyen and Brenden Camp kept the Hannibal-LaGrange offensive assault at bay on Saturday afternoon, while the Scot offensive produced 22 hits and Lyon stayed atop the American Midwest Conference standings with a 9-1, 5-4 doubleheader sweep of the Trojans at Scots Field.
