Information About the McGuire Family and the Collection

The McGuire family, John and Cynthia (great-great grandparents of donor Paul M. McGuire) and six children, migrated from North Carolina to Independence County, Arkansas, in the 1830s, settling in Greenbriar Township south of the White River.  The records and materials in this collection relate to the original McGuires as well as to their numerous offspring in the Batesville area.  (For more information, please consult Nancy S. Griffith’s “The W. L. McGuire Journals,” Independence County Chronicle 34 (April-July 1993):  3-47.)

The collection contains correspondence, photographs, a Civil War-era journal, and other miscellanea, such as genealogy charts and various certificates and diplomas, spanning a timeframe from 1830 to 1903.

Nancy S. Griffith completed processing in 1990, and Kim Halpain and Judy Blackwell completed detailed indexing and the website finding aid in 2002.  The collection is open for research.
